2000 4.6 exhaust Question
Both my exhaust pipes broke off.... they broke off on the outlet side of my muffler...so now there is only 2 inches left after the muffler. Question is how much back pressure do i need to get best performance. Its sounds alot louder but i think i might have lost some torque but seems to be a little more responsive. I will probably have to buy a new muffler but want some opinions on how to run the exhaust/ size of pipes etc. My current muffler sits about a foot in front of my rear tire . It is a flowmaster single-IN/dual-OUT
stay with your stock pipe size if you are doing a cat back system 2.5" or around there. true duals isn't right for these vehicles, and cutting the cats shouldn't be an option if you want performance. if you want the dual exhaust look get a single inlet dual outlet muffler of brand of choice, a lot of people have their preferences on which muffler so i'm not voicing mine on this subject, just don't use a cherry bomb lol. there is a proper way to do dual exhaust with the use of an x or h pipe but i haven't seen or heard of many people doing that.
i like the look of no tail pipes but it is illegal in some states and it can be dangerous if the exhaust gases enter the cabin obviously but it's a clean look and it makes your muffler louder since the tail pipes are gone.
hope this helped.
I went to a muffler shop that did free estimates...he priced $350 for new muffler and exhaust pipes but it was a dual exhaust-2 pipes...each pipe running from cat to a dual-in/dual out muffler....he said it would make it sound more throaty...i would like to have a throaty sound like the mustangs have but not the roar inside the cab nor a loss in performance....sometimes it sound like im driving a riding lawn mower with the blades engaged
$350 sounds pretty good for what you describe. when i first had mine done (wish i would have planned it) i had si/do flowmaster with 2 tailpipes exiting at the corners. too quiet. cut the tailpipes off and i like it just the way it is but haven't had someone do a driveby for me. the farther away from the cab you get with tail pipes the less sound you will have in the cab. i would say trust what that guy says and see what happens.
the speakers are not that difficult at all to do. the kind that i have are specially made for our trucks to fit in the doors by pioneer. they're pioneer 6x8 speakers. i don't remember if they are 2 or 3 way but i'm leaning toward three way. pop the panel off after taking the screws out from behind the door handle, under the window/lock switches and maybe some at the bottom of the door. then unscrew the old speaker and put the new one in. you may have to buy the connectors for it but i did mine over 3 years ago i don't remember for sure.
