Molybdate levels
Earlier this spring I took my '92 F-250 with a 7.3 out of storage and tested the coolant with the Fleetguard strips. The nitrite and freeze point pads changed color, but the molybdate (center pad) remained unchanged. I've always used FW-16 right from the Ford dealership and couldn't remember when I last added some, so I poured in two more bottles. Thinking my strips were to blame, I picked up a fresh one and retested it after driving it for a few weeks. Same result, the middle pad does not change color at all but my nitrite pad now matches row H on the chart. What gives? Am I safe to run it, or why aren't my molybdate levels even registering on the test strips even with two fresh bottles of additive?
All the times I've tested it in the years past I always got a color change on all three pads. I haven't changed coolant for several years but I hardly drive this truck, maybe 2,000 miles a year at the most.
