first diesel

I am looking to buy my first diesel truck. The one that has got my eye is a F250 04 6.0L Power Stroke. After searching and reading stickies, i understand i need to get reports and such but my main concern is it has 144k miles. Are miles not as important as routine maintenance, or should that many miles be a red flag?

edit: actually here is a link, http://redmccombs.com/Vehicle.aspx?v=2364611

Looking here too, trying to be sure that my buddy gets a good Ford over a dodge truck.

That seems expensive for a truck with that high milleage. Though they can go way higher, I've seen a few chassis cabs 6.0's around 250k and more.

yea the sticker price is quite a bit, especially with the few interior tears/problems but I'm sure they'll go down. Disregarding the price for now, with that high of mileage, would it not be worth paying for an inspection?

Oh I'm sorry, WELCOME. I hope you find all the info you are looking for. There is a lot of info here but it is a bit cluttered with so many threads. That's why I made that thread to help me and the rest of the people.

Yeah 04 and 144k miles. There is no factory warranty on a suspected problematic year. I'd be scared of that.

Well, I would buy it if you could get a couple year warranty, providing the Oasis is good. I bought mine off ebay from Texas 2.5 years ago, 127k and a good Oasis. Paid $23k Never drove it until they unloaded it off the trailer. I would do it all over again. And as far as miles, I'd rather buy one with more miles than less, you know it was driven and doesn't have "lot rot". King Ranch is a sweet truck. Also it is a 5 speed trans, not 4 as posted. I'd see if you can talk him down on the price.
EDIT: check KBB.com, that truck in my zip code, in excellent cond., would retail for $25k

is an OASIS report something there normally dont offer to show you? He just gave me the normal carfax report. Its a very good looking truck, and Im going to call the local Diesel Performance shop that seemed to have the best reputation to try and get them to do a inspection for me. Due to the interior tears and miles i know i can get him down on price. Also, what kind of warranty can you usually talk them into?

Oasis prolly has to come from Ford? It'll show you all work done under warranty. A large list isn't necessarily a bad thing, post it on here if you get it and the gurus here will give you thumbs up or down. With mine, I figured after all those miles it has to have all the bugs worked out of it, and Oasis showed minimal stuff. I recently had to replace a HPOP on my dime, so steer away from Penn Warranty Corp. You should be able to buy an aftermarket warranty from the dealer, if you are in fact buying it from one. I think thats where it is, a dealer of some sort judging by the pics?

Oh, and Carfax and Oasis ARE 2 different reports. Would be a good idea to have the diesel shop check it out, if they are willing. Good luck, keep us posted!

Bigred90 welcome to FTE. I have found this to be an valuable site for Ford truck information. You will find that there are a few knuckleheads that have to be overlooked but by and large the people on this forum are knowledgeable and willing to provide sound advice.

If you haven't already, spend some time reading the threads in the tech folder.

The price for the truck you are looking at sounds high for a 2004 with that many miles in my opinion. I bought the 2006 shown in my sig earlier this year with only 52K miles for basically the same dollars. I would suggest at least checking AutoTrader.com and E-bay Motors to get a feel for what similar trucks are bringing before making a purchase.

Good looking truck though! I should be out waxing mine instead of here reading ;o)

thanks for the input guys. I found what seems to be the most respected diesel shop in san antonio, and im going to call about an inspection tomorrow. I know the price is very high right now, but I wont take the truck for more than 15.5k with that many miles and the interior is quite beat up.
