Trailer brake controller wiring problem

92 ranger 2.3 liter

I recently bought a trailer brake controller to help stop a trailer i pull. Im having a problem figuring out where to hook up the red wire. ITs the wire that is suppose to splice into the cold side of the vehicles stop lamp switch.

My brake has a switch with 2 wires, one green, one green with red stripe.
My volt meter shows the green one to be hot all the time even with no key on, the other one gets 12 volts when the brake pedal is pushed in.

When i hooked the red wire from the controller to the wire that gets hot once the pedal is pressed it pops the inline fuse on the power cord.

The other wire is hot all the time so that wouldn't work?

The only other thing i can think of is to find the wire the feeds the tail lights, NEED HELP.

What make and model brake controller are you using??

you should have 4 wires,
  • Battery power
  • Main ground
  • Switched power
  • power to trailer brakes

sounds like you have a wire going to ground between the controller and the plug in, unless you are hooked up to the trailer then it could be in the trailer.. fuse should only blow when it is overloaded or shorted out.

If you disconnect the Blue wire (at the controller) going to the brake connection for the trailer, and connect the red to the switched side of the truck brake, does the fuse still blow??

If you PM your Phone number I will be glad to talk you through the diagnostics

Do you have the trailer up and running/stopping yet?

Re: the current draw for the trailer monitoring (light), the circuit employs a transistorized c/b drawing <10ma, would require >5000hrs (connected to trailer, engine not running)to draw down the average battery in the tow vehicle.

Special thanks to aquanaut20 for calling me on the phone and helping me sort out the trailer brake problems.

The problem was the ground on the trailer brakes was wired with the power line for the trailer brakes. There were 2 wires on the magnets and one was suppose to be a ground and the other was for power. i had both wires going for power. SO i had to ground the brakes, ground the trailer, and ground my truck.

Thanks for help, now everything works properly.
