losing oil

I am stuck. I have a 2004, F-150, 5.4, 68,000 miles.

I am adding about a quart a month, maybe a little more and I can't see where it's going. Not dripping, not smoking, not running down the engine.

The only clue is on start up, it runs great, but, after it warms up, it has an odd sound as if its...low on oil..go figure.

anyone have any clue? i am totally bewildered on this one.

the 4.6 and 5.4 do burn a little bit of oil

and that is perfectly normal.

about 1/2 to maybe 1 quart is considered an okay amount between oil changes.

So how many miles are you getting between adding another quart in there?

the sad part is, its not that many miles. my daughter has the truck now. i have to get her to give me the mileage since she added 2 quarts today. but i am guessing less than 1,000 miles.

that is alot of oil to be adding with no indicators.

Does this sound go away after you add oil? If so, this is NOT GOOD! Has anyone noticed any blue or black smoke coming out of your tailpipe? Might be a good idea to follow your daughter around the block after the engine has been sitting overnight and look for smoke. If it's burning oil it's already too late for that engine...

How many miles are on the truck?

as long as it runs...keep adding oil. Fixing it at this point isn't economical...and pointless IMO for just a little smoke.

the Walmart Tech oil is what? about $1.50-2.00 a quart?

If the seals are toast, I'd drive that motor into the ground and then do a junkyard swap with another 04-08 5.4 3v from a Expy/F-150/Navi/Superduty/Econoline and drive the rest of the truck into the ground.
just buy a case of oil everynow and then and keep her topped off.

been there and done that before...many many times actually

I agree. however, I might go ahead and try a different oil, now I'm not saying that whatever your using is not good, but the last 3 new trucks I've had all would burn a slight bit of the recommended "factory" brandf oil, (all less than a quart in 3500-5000 miles though) and after a few thousand miles of adding this oil I always revert back to my favorite (non factory) syntheticblend of the same weight and Viola. no oil consumed again. way back before I had this favorite brand, I also had a used rig that the previous owner said he alwasy used penzoil in. I found that it would burn penzoil, or shellrotella but not a drop of another brand.

follow up

i haven't thought about checking the tailpipe. I will do that today.

I have not noticed any smoke either on start up or after running.

No drips. Coolant is clean (first place I looked)

No, the sound does not go away. It does not make it on start up, just after its warmed up.

I use MobileOne 10-30

I will get it compression checked this week and let y'all know.

The truck has 72,000 on it.

NOT GOOD!

These engines are NOT designed for that thick oil! They need 5W20!

there are engineer specs and then driveway guestimates

I'll take the Engineer specs anyday. They designate that oil for a reason.

Knock after warm up usually indicates cam phasers, also these engines are very sensitive to oil viscosity. 5w20 is the recomended oil..... put what ever you want in it, its your truck.

Yep. agree with 442w30, Cam phasers, won't hurt anything, My 04 has been making noise for 40,000 miles, No problems. started at 66K. I tried 5w30 didn't make a difference on the noise, tried one quart of 10w40 between changes. made a little difference, was quiet for about 2 week, then got oil changed, had 5w20 put back in. Noisy again.

my 04 also uses about a quart in 3k miles. no leaks no drips, no smoke.

If you want to see if it is the phasers do this: Hot engine, In park, rev the engine to 1500, and see if you still hear the noise. If you don't, chances are that you have the infamous phaser noise ( usually only heard below 1200 rpms.)
