Backpressure Requirements?????

I have been reading through alot of older threads lately and have seen some mixed information on downpipes and what is needed as far as backpressure requirements for the 6.0. In the past on the forum some guys have claimed that you should not run anything over a 3 or 3.5 inch downpipe because of and backpressure requirements. Others are running 4 inch downpipes and claiming that you do not need backpressure with a diesel the way you do with a gasoline engine. I am no diesel tech so before I go after a larger down pipe I'd like to get some newer views and opinions.

There is an exhaust back pressure sensor but it's in the drivers side exhaust manifold. Anything over a certain size is NOT gonna get you any benefit as you can only push so much out the turbo exhaust outlet anyway. I've been running 3.5 downpipe to 4" exhaust since 04 and have no problems. Factory is 3", but there's nothing wrong with letting it breathe better a little better and removing all the restrictions.

That was what I was thinking. I was thinking if the turbo is holding pressure back on the exhaust anyway all it would do is possibly allow the turbo to spool a bit faster because it allows a bigger outlet for the exhaust. And that any backpressure needed would still be held between the exhaust manifold and the turbo.

Thanks for the Input. I took my truck in to a guy who said he would charge me $325 for a 4 inch turbo back exhaust with a pro flo muffler and a 5 inch tip. When I went to pick it up. He hacked the thing off right before the catalytic converter and placed the 4 inch pipe over like a sleeve and built it up with weld. I guess he wasn't expecting me to crawl under the truck and check his work. I let him know that wasn't what we had agreed upon and he said he knew but that the truck needed the 3 inch downpipe for backpressure, blah blah blah. I guess this is why I should have gone with a quality product like MBRP. Anyway I paid the guy rather than argue and now I will be buying a 4 inch downpipe and complete the system myself.

Thanks again

The biggest advantage to a larger down pipe is to help reduce EGT. I have a MBRP with 3.5 inch down pipe now for about 2 years no problems. The muffler guy does not know what he is talking about.

I wouldn't have paid him anything at all!!! Even if it was a shade tree muffler guy a deal is a deal. This would be the said fella and myself after I came out from under my truck. For $325 you could have a good S/S exhaust. I paid 400 installed without a tip. The tip cost me another $60.00 so I should've got the kit with the exhaust tip for a little more.

IMO that turbo is going to be the happies with NO exhaust. I dont believe that you need back pressure post turbo. The turbo creates backpressure between the engine and turbo. Like posted above, once over a certain size downpipe, it wont matter. I think a 3.5''DP is sufficient for these turbos.
