A simple question.

I really hate to ask this, because it will probably give the imprression that I dont know which end of a truck is the front,,but oh well..

Where does the terminology of 1/2,,3/4,,1ton truck come in.My f-150 is considered a half ton.my 350 is a one ton.I know its not the weight of the trucks or even the payload.where does this come from????

There is a thread in the large truck forum related to this. The best explanation in there was that after WWII, military vehicles had the designation based on what their payload was after all the fuel, tools, equipment, and occupants were loaded. The designations made it into the civilian market. Today, the designations stick but don't really describe the true capability of the truck.

Since technology has advanced as well as the desires of the general public, the competition between manufacturers has increased payload far beyond it's original capabilities. Instead of payload capability, it's more like different truck "classes" now.
