I don't use my truck all that much, drive it to work every so often. So yesterday i decided to clean the Air Filter and when I opened the housing the filter material was missing and in its place was a Squirrels nest. Replaced the filter and inspected the turbine inlet. can't see any real damage, turbo still developes full boost. I am trying to develope a plan to inspect the intake track but don't know what all to look at/for and what else I can do to minimze the damage to the engine from inhaling all of that junk. I have also replaced the Normal and Bypass oil filters. Any help sure is appreciated. Thanks!!
Wow, that would be wild to find.. Had you started the truck withthe nest in there? If not, sounds to me you should be fine.. If you started it withthe nest, then I have to step back and listen to some of the experts here. I am guessing you have cleaned all the way up to the turbo once you found the nest? WHat condition was the intake tube in?
If there is no damage on the compressor wheel you are probably fine. Throw a few dryer sheets under the hood (zip tie them to things) and it should help keep your nutty buddies at bay.
OHH yes, The truck has been driven. How long this condition existed I do not know. the turbo inlet looked oiley but no obvious damage to the compressor wheel. I am hoping all the oil in the intake track has captured the fine stuff in the intercooler. I believe I will be taking the intercooler off soon.
I also had pack rats build a nest in the filter box before I did the 6637. Even dryer sheets, and other "home remedies" won't keep those critters out if it sits long enough. I would go for a mesh screen on the intake if you don't change to a 6637.
