The trouble keeps coming with this Truck!! 85 F150 with 5.0 FI. Drove it for about 1 and 1/2 hours at interstate speeds, 60-65. Gets hot and just dies. When it starts to do this it hesitates as if it is not getting gas then just cuts off. It will not restart right away. When it sits for a few minutes it will start, only by flooring the gas pedal, but then dies again. The truck had to be towed off but when it got the shop it started up and ran just fine. Anyone have any thoughts, is there something that cuts the truck off when it thinks it is going to overheat? <?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-comfficeffice" /><o></o> <o></o> Great Truck but getting very frustrated with it lately. <o></o>
thanks for all the info.!!
Check your ignition module. When these start to go bad, they act up and cause the exact system you have just described.
Make sure you get a MOTORCRAFT replacement unit, and apply some di-electric grease on the distributor where the module mounts. This will help keep the module cool in the future.
YES, it is located on the side of the distributor. You will have to remove the whole distributor and you will need a funky thin walled socket wrench to get the ignition module off.
I have no idea why Ford thought that was a good idea.
Just had this same thing happen to me. Unfortunately I read this AFTER I replaced the fuel pump.....twice! It sure fooled me. Acted just like a starved carb.
