I placed a charcoal filter in the air duct I thought it worked, but now I still get that occasional exhaust smell. I checked for leaks at the up pipes and all around the exhaust route. The only place I can figure where the exhaust is coming from is the EBPV. I may have to plug that.
Just in case any of you want to try the filter. I took out the glove box to access the plenum cover. I got a universal cut to fit charcoal filter from Home Depot that had a plastic grate. I screwed in two screws part way in to the back of the plenum so the filter doesn't fall forward. IIRC, I cut about a 7x7 piece of filter. I slid it into place and the fit seemed fine. It seemed to work, but it definitely does not stop skunk odor. I'll change it out now that I notice the exhaust smell again.

Damn...you guys are good. Found the "valley" and sure enough there was a pool of diesel there. I've been meaning to change the fuel filter, so if I change the filter and the O-rings (from guzzle) will that take care of it?

Well, if that's where your leak is coming from. I would change all the above.
FWIW, I have recently dismantled two Excursions (1 2000 gasser and 1 2002 PSD). Neither one had a cabin air filter or any provisions for it. Maybe it was a later model item??? I had the A/C unit completely out of each truck - nothing there... I was surprised. Unless I missed something - twice?
Maybe they're in the cowl area, underneath the plastic trim below the windshieldwipers on the pass. side? Just a thought. Or try looking in the Excursion forum on this website.
There is an air filter/port/screen behind the rear seats on the back wall of the cabin. It vents to/from the area behind the cab, but before the bed starts. It's not hooked up to the AC, at least as far as I could tell, but smells can come in through there.
If you can't find an exhaust leak at the up pipes, you should start looking in the exhaust manifold area. My left manifold was leaking, the way I found it was to get under the truck with the engine running. I used a medical stethoscope with a 1/4" x 1' long piece of copper tubing stuck in the end. It didn't take long to find it.
I took the manifold off and had it resurfaced at a local automotive machine shop. Problem solved.
I'll use a heater hose to search for the leak at the exhaust manifolds.
So, I changed out my charcoal filter before my last road trip. It definitely filtered particulates. I snapped pics this time. I did the change at night, but I think the pics will give you guys a better idea.
Now how do I post pics?
