can someone please help!!!!!! i was driving my 99 ford ranger when i noticed my oil level was on L , engine got noisy and shut down. did my oil pump fail or is it something more simple, need answers quickly as i use my truck to get to work and back. (2.5 L. 120k mil.) engine did crank over after it cooled down, actually started i'm ready to change oil pump , any advice would help, thanks
This is what i would do.... buy an oil filter and your brand of oil for your truck and change it, then start the truck and see what happens. If the engine is still making a lot of noise i would find another way to work. You may want to spring for an oil additive like Lucas or Zmax. Are you in AZ?
yes it moves from below L to L only. would oil pressure switch cause no oil to get to motor? motor completely stalled, does start but still has no pressure. i don't want to keep cranking for fear of causing more damage.
Whats the oil level on the stick, right now?.........How about coolant? did it overheat? If you pull out the dipstick, does the oil on it appear to have metal flakes in it?
oil level showing full , yes has coolant, no did not overheat. what could problem be other than bad oil pump? is there something easier to replace before i tear apart motor to get to oil pump? (99 ford ranger 2.5 lit.) don't want to take to a shop and be taken for a ride, like i've said before gauge moves from below L to L only and motor will start but sounds dry ( no oil getting to motor)
I would do this, pull the coil wire and then pull the valve cover, crank it over and see if oil is pumping to the top end, If not, stop and go to plan B
this is what i did and it seems to have worked (to my surprise) i put in a new oil pressure switch, cost 5.99 !!!!!! , this is saving me 100s of dollars as i was ready to put in new oil pump . thank you all for your advice !!!!!!! i really appreciate it
Nice, good job, sending unit either shows pressure or no pressure, the gauge is an idiot light disguised as a guage. It shows pressure unless the pressure is less than 8 psi, and then it shows no pressure, it's not like it shows L when the pressure is 15 psi and just above L when the pressure is 20 psi, or tops out when the pressure is 86 psi.
My 1999 Service Manual says to replace the sending unit, if the guage still is out of calibration replace the guage. That's it two steps. Nuff Said.

............The defective oil pressure switch must have shut the engine down like it is supposed too ! How often do you change your oil and filter ? rb
