i just bought a 96 F-350 dually. ive had it three days and im already in love! screw a nissan hardbody!! i got it for $650 great body, bed liner, toolbox, quad cab, 5 spd, 2 wd, gooseball, aftermarket rear bumper.......... and a shot motor w/ 306K and a blown piston (ether?). im prob gonna rebuild if the blocks ok. i got the truck with no keys or title. the title is in the works. the keys are giving me hell. i got a replacement cyl at autozone and my question is whether the key cyl or some other mech is responsible for springing the key back after the starter motor has been engaged. right now, i can turn the key all the way forward into the "start" pos w/ no resistance. i have to maually twist the key back to disengage the starter. is it the ign. cyl. or a part in the steering column?
Welcome to FTE. Alldata is a great source of information for not much money. They are also a sponsor here. For under 20 bucks you get a wealth of information and a bunch of your time saved.
It looks like 46 is the sliding switch. I think 40 pushes back on all that jazz to the left until it hits 35 and maybe view C and pooshes 40 (ignition switch) back to the run position. It is hard to tell w/o the actual parts in front of me. Just a thought. Let us know what you find.
wow. honestly, i became a member of this website with absolutely no idea of what to expect. its only like day three and im blown away. the level of hospitalty and assistance was def not expected. makes me like ford that much more.
anyway, havent had time to take the column apart yet but on a side note, i had a friend help me with the old ign cyl removal that really amounted to inserting a sturdy flathead into the cyl and turning until something gave. we just need it to turn until it reached the "run" pos so we could depress the locking pin and pull out the cyl. nothing "appeared" to be damaged so we inserted the new cyl and found it did not spring and here i am now.
I felt the same way when I joined. This place has saved me thousands of dollars! literaly!!! and it's fun too! In the upper left had corner on the long blue navigation bar there is a "user CP" button. In that button you can add a signature (button on the left). If you tell year milage mods etc. It helps when diagnosing other problems. I don't know much about the steering column. Someone else may have been down this road before. Here is a cool website while you wait : http://pages.prodigy.net/stevebaz/_i...az/index3.html

You have to have a certain number of posts before you can have a signature... But you'll get there soon.
Welcome to FTE! Awesome site with great advice. Just wait till the PMS (Powerstroke Mod Syndrome) bug bites you!
holy crap. i talk to the wifes uncle (whose a trained diesel mech.) and he suggest pulling the heads to ascertain the condition of the pistons. "good idea" i think to myself. i go to pull the heads and realize that im better off just pulling the motor since i have the equipment to do it with. is it possible (feasable?) to pull it out from the top? is it possible to pull it from the top w/ trans attached? one at a time? anyways..... i go to drain the oil and as soon as the drain plug is popped, out flows almost 5 whole gallons of water, followed by what appears to be triple digested chocolate pudding. arrrg...
sonds like a head gaskets is done! Is your anitfreeze low? I would maybe think about starting a new thread for this project. I would also maybe think about replacing glowplugs if you are in a cold climate. I am sure someone will give you some better advice.
Ooooh yea X2 on what copedawg said about the head gasket. The only way to get the engine out is through the top. The crossmember that is under the engine is riveted to the frame if I am not mistaken. But as for the engine and trans coming out the same time I honestly dont see why they wont come out together. Dont forget the engine weights approx 965 Pounds so with the trans on it will weigh quite a bit.
i wasnt gonna say anything before, but i just spoke with another car guy and he has a high suspicion of sabatoge. i first drained the coolant. it did not look low or contaminated. when i first saw the water out of the pan i also suspected a blown head gasket, but this water was clear, like bottled water clear, and cause there was near 5 gallons of it, i am sure there would have been a rather noticable deficit in the cooling system. another thing i keep running into is cut wires. just random wires, ones easily accesable and with no appearant intention. getting kinda concerned......
You might want to just pull the whole front clip off. That'll make it a lot easier to pull the motor.
Also make sure you have a GOOD 1500# plus engine hoist. The engine alone weighs about 1k pounds, with the trans too? Yeah... that'll be a doosy.

You have any angry hippies cruising by your house in a prius giving you dirty looks?
THey'll sneak up on you cause the only sound their car makes is "whoosh"
I would put the oil back in w/filter and run it and see if it comes back. If it is the head gasket the owner may have just been dumping water to keep it full. I wouls ask him about about possible sabbatoge. Do you notice anything else not working properly? Did you get your ignition fixed? What was it?
both batteries are dead and are not acepting a charge ( either that or my charger is shot). i have kinda sidelined the ign prob reasoning that its pointless right now while i know that i def have motor prob. i got a sure 'nuff hoist. rated at 2 tons anyways. as for hippies, well im only 22 and guard my vehicles as if they were kin (well liked kin). this truck sat up on the other side of a small building very near the highway for several months completely unlocked. im personally amazed it was as intact as it was. we'll simply never know about all the cut wires and water. just accept it and move on i guess...hell, i could prob get my money back in scrap metal alone, but as a true blue lover, i would never do that!!
