i've got an 01 F350 crew cab and Around 30-40 mph i have a really good groaning humming sound like loud tire noise that seems to be coming from my drivers side front, and i can feel a slight but noticable vibration in my feet. I checked for bad wheel bearings both sides and tires seem to be stiff with no play. I have noticed that if i grab the stub axle shaft at the u joints behind the tires, i have about oh 1/8" of play on both sides at most (spindle bearings??). Also if i get under my truck at the carrier bearing, i can grab the drive shaft on both sides of the carrier bearing and move it up and down quite a bit. What is the acceptable amount of play here? Anything else i should be looking for? Any advice on where to go from here would be great.
Yes, pull off the driver side wheel and caliper. Then pull of the hub lock selector. At that point you should be able to see if the hub bearing assembly is failing or failed. I would not delay here as if it is failing, you may be able to save the axle if you caught it in time. $$$$$$$$

If there is a problem with the drive shaft then consider yourself lucky but I would be after that hub check just to be sure.
are talking about the entire hub bearing assembly failing or the spindle bearing?
Yes and yes. The seals in both of mine are shot but my bearings are still good. The sealed bearings inside the Timkens are not serviceable. The needle bearing is. I have to go grill dinner right now. I'll try to post up a pic later.
Ok, see the grease coming out of the seal in the first pic:
Now upon removal of the driver side I saw that the inner seal was leaking as well as the one on the outer side where the pencil is pointing. You can also see the needle bearing in the center of the hub. That you can replace. Nothing else can be removed.
I am surprised nobody else chimed in on the carrier bearing thing. Up and down quite a bit does not sound right to me but I forgot to check that while I was cooking earlier.
When you checked for play at the wheels, did you have the wheels jacked up off of the ground?
i been out of town since the las post. but tonight I tried locking the hubs to see if it could be a spindle bearing, and when i did the passenger side made a really loud chatter grinding noise. It went away when i unlocked it. So would this be the unit bearing assembly goin bad most likely?
Just tryin to get it pinned the best i can before tearin into it...
