Clattering lifter???
I saw mention of this in another thread, but thought I would start a new one, maybe others have heard of this. I also have a 4.0L 89 Cherokee, that when I start it (sometimes) one lifter starts clattering. After immediately re-starting, it sounds quiet and normal. This happens on the first start of the day, and only about once every 2 weeks or so. The clatter is really loud, and obviously coming from only 1 lifter. I am running 10w-40 Castrol in it with a Fram (ugh) filter. Any ideas as to cause? (Jeep only has 78K on it) Thanks. Don

Don't worry about it as long as it goes away within 5-10 seconds. The lifter is not getting oil. My ford will do that when I first start it every morning but goes away within 5 seconds.

Could be the anti-drain back valve on the oil filter. I had the same problem before w/ a Fram filter. Replaced it w/ a Motorcraft filter and the problem went away.

My 460 EFI has a lifter problem too. It depends where the cam is and what valve is open. If the valve is actuated on a bad lifter it will compress and take awhile to pump full of oil.
