From what I can tell from the Haynes Manual, the transmission and transfer case fluids are the same: both SAE 140W oil.
Right now, the tranny fluid is red, while the tcase is brown, was this at one time the same fluid?
I believe that my tranny is the np435 and the tcase the np205.

I found that the Haynes manual was wrong. The NP435 and 205 take 80W, and the diffs take 90W. The brown you see is probably gear oil, if it has a strong smell. The red sounds like ATF. I have heard of this being used, but wouldn't recommend it. I changed my tranny lube on Saturday, and it shifts much better. Good luck.

You know that if the tranfer case fluid is red, it may use automatic transmission fluid. The ownners manual for my '83 says to use Dexron II ATF in my NP208F transfer case. Of course they are also different transfer cases.
