hard shiftting BW13-45 transfer case
When I shift into 4WD it often will be hard to get into gear and or it may make a little noise. My best results are to be completely stopped and in neutral with normal idle. I try to jockey it into gear fairly quickly and I try to be smooth, but occasionally it will act up and need another pass.
BTW it is a good idea especially if you don't use 4WD very often, to either put the hubs in lock(2WD)(I usually do this since it also allows me to really use 4WD if needed on the fly) or shift into 4WD(hubs unlocked, note Ford manual doesn't recommend this) and drive for a few miles. The Ford Truck Bible says this helps to lubricate the front axle. They say this allows the axle shafts to spin freely while splashing oil and prevents the problem of being in 4WD on dry pavement(ie uneven wheel speed causing "nibble"). I do this every month or two for maybe 5 miles.
Good Luck,
Jim Henderson
