steering issues

I just came across a 94 f150 4x4 xlt with the 5.8. It has high miles 225K but the price was right

Some issues that need to be addressed

The main is the power steering doesn't work below 2K rpm's. Is it the pump? It full of fulid or could it be a speed sensor?

The other issues is the air bag light keeps blinking and none of the buttons work on the steering wheel. no horn cruise ect. Any ideas where to look? I would think it would be a issue in the steering colum

Passenger door does't open from the inside. I will pull it apart and check into it.

Check engine light comes on now and again. But does't stay on? How do you check for the codes?

It shifts ok for the most part but some times has a hard shift when letting off the gas.

I think thats all for now. I am sure I will find more issues as time goes on.

Steering: Yes, I would assume it is the pump.

Airbag light, horn, cruise: Probably the clock spring in the column; available thru Ford, ebay, or a used column at a salvage yard.

Passenger door: Most likely the cable or actuating lever that the handle attaches to; available thru Ford, LMC - perhaps others, or (again) salvage yard.

CEL: Pull codes, using procedure in shop manual; or do a search here on FTE.

Shifts: A fluid & filter change/flush could be all that is needed.

That should get you started!

-------------If the fluid is up and it is do this most likely it is a faulty pump. Is it squeeling or making noise, how does the steering gear feel?

The other issues is the air bag light keeps blinking and none of the buttons work on the steering wheel. no horn cruise ect. Any ideas where to look? I would think it would be a issue in the steering colum:

---------------There is a spiral cable/column switch which may be defective, tear it apart and make sure all the contact are clean and making good connections.

Passenger door does't open from the inside. I will pull it apart and check into it.

-----------------See if one of the clips is broke or maybe the rod is bent. Maybe a bad door latch.

Check engine light comes on now and again. But does't stay on? How do you check for the codes?

----------------You can by an Actron scanner to plug in the diagnostic port under the hood, or you can use an Ohm meter to count the movements to get a count for what code(s) you may have. You will need to reference that with a repair manual or search on line once you have the codes. Most aftermarket manuals can tell you how to get the codes without a Ford scan tool.

It shifts ok for the most part but some times has a hard shift when letting off the gas.

---------------Not much of an Automatic guy - I would start with the easy obvious stuff like a trans service (filter and fluid change) and see if that helped it. Beyond that you may need to have some bands adjusted or you have more serious issues.

Good Luck .................
