I have a 1994 F-150 4X4 ext cab short box. The rear tank never worked since I've had it so I always used the front tank but in the last month a fuel smell has turned into a quick drip when over 1/4 tank or so. I was just wondering what other years of tank would fit my truck, just the 93-95's or would the 87-92 work aswell? Also from looking at the tank in my 89 long bed parts truck I'm assuming that I'll need the tank from a short bed too?
One other question for now would the rear tank and/or pump from the 89 work in my 94?
I'll hopefully be able to pull the bed next week as I have several other issues to deal with back there so dealing with the tanks *should* be pretty easy...
I'm not an expert, but looking from my LMC catalog, you cannot use the long bed fuel tank in the short cab box, but, as I stated, this is what LMC is showing.
They also show that there are 2 different fuel tanks for the short bed. 1 for model years 87-89, and the 2nd / 90-96. I also believe that on the '94, the fuel pump sits inside the tank whereas on the '89, it is mounted on the inside frame.
I also did a search on oreilly's web site and it shows 2 different fuel tank models for the '89 and the '94.
If you have a local Ford dealership, they can also check and let you know what or if, there are any difference's, if you want to know.
Hopefully another FTE member will come along and help with the other details.
Your '89 has a low pressure in-tank pumps with a high pressure booster on the frame while the '94 has high pressure in-tank pumps only. The tanks may interchange but I'm not sure if the pump modules will, something you'll have to investigate.
The 89 and the 94 tanks are two different animals. the pre-90 tanks have a smaller opening for the in tank pump/ fuel sender and the 91-96 tanks have the larger openings for the hi-pressure pump/ module to sit in.
Hey if I can make a suggestion I would say go with a new plastic tank. I just ordered one from MTS company. I figured I would go with plastic since it will never rust.
Little bit more money, but might be well worth it..
I have an 89 F-150 regular cab long box. I am having some trouble with the front fuel tank. It will not pump fuel when I switch from the rear tank to the front tank. I have checked all the standard stuff, pump, sending unit, fuel lines and the relay switch. Does anyone have any other ideas? I installed new tanks front and rear about 4 months ago, and everything worked fine. Any help would be helpful.
