Hey yall. i'm looking for a 250 or 350 with a 300 I6 in it but can't find many. I'm finding tons of em with the 460 though. So i'm interested in it...
What kind of real world gas milage are you 460 guys getting?
Are there any inherant problems with the 460? Any things to look out for?
And are the parts hard to find or more expensive?
I'm not new to the auto world but new to knowing details on Ford's engines. I don't see them often enough to really know anything about them.
Thanks again for any help,
Erik
I've had two 460 trucks, both were 5-Speeds. My '92 unloaded highway mileage (staying under 65mph) I actually got one time 14 mpg. Most of the time it was around 12 mpg. My current truck is a Crew Cab 4x4 truck and I am in process of adding some mods and getting the computer reflashed and burned. But running confused like it is I got 11 mpg on my camping trip this last weekend. But on average I say both trucks got 10 mpg. I have a heavy foot!
parts are a dime a dozen. i usually get about 10 with mine, but i just put some cylinder sealing additave in with the oil change and i seem to have gained some ponies back. i dont know if my mileage is better or not because as soon as i did it, i hooked on to a 40 foot goose neck, loaded up my 76 and drove 2000 miles over the rockies. i averaged 8 doing so. and that was also running between 80 and 85 mph almost the whole way with 4.10s and a 5 speed. i hate its stupid fuel infection... but when tuned they do pretty dang good.

My god, where do you reside where you dont see many Ford trucks?
they are rather popular nationally........the 300 is a great engine, but most people who chose either an f250 or 350 wanted a v8,so your npt going to see that many of the I6's.....
I ran into the same thing when I bought mine, there was 250's all over the place but they all had the 5.8 or 7.5. Couldn't find a 300 anywhere, ended up with the 460. I get 14 highway (under 2k) with cruise and 10 around town, I have a pretty light foot most of the time.
if i recall correctly,in the late 80's-early 90's you saw some lighter duty, lower gvw rated F250's with the 300,im fairly certain that they were in the 6700-low 7000 lb gvwr range as opposed to the F250HD at 8600 lbs gvw.......i also believe that the standard F250's from that era used a semi-floating rear axle, while the HD's used a full floater
never met anyone who regreted getting a 460 mine runs great with 170k on the clock pulled up to about 10k so far at most barely know its there great tow motor and my last vehicle was a excursion 2001 7.3 diesel in it...and it has no problem gettin up and goin with a littl eplayin around with timing etc.
When you have 2,500lbs of cab-over camper and a 2,500lb boat in tow + gear and people, and can pass almost all of the traffic on a 6% grade at high altitude on a hot day.......You never regret having the 460!...............Except at the next gas station.
yup, leaned out an blow a hole in #2 piston top 13k ago, and still havent been able to kill this engine yet, my mud pic, 7 cylinders, water was high enuff to come in my doors
i can play bumper tag with hemi's on the highway, with only 7 cylinders
lolol
