Hey yall! I have an old project I never got to finish and need help on some facts. I have a 429 that came out of a '68/69 ltd that I was going to swap into my 89 f150. I already rebuilt the motor and its been sitting in the corner for a couple of years and I'm sick of looking at it. My issue is a trans because I would love to put a zf 5 speed out of a 90's 460 f250/350 but wondering about the flywheel. I know the bolt pattern should be the same for the trans but how should I get a flywheel . I believe the zf's use an 11 inch flywheel but did they change the bottom end balance of the 429's and 460's like the small blocks . The motor rebuild is fairly mild so the power shouldn't increase that much. I really would like to use this trans instead of the c6 so I can have an overdrive. Thanks in advance for any help.
they went to external balance in 79 (some mid 78's also). the pre 79 engines used internal balance so you cannot swap the flywheels/flexplates between the two.
not sure what is needed, but maybe someone else can pipe in with the correct flywheel choice.
the other option is to use a flywheel from a newer 460 and get it neutral balanced by a machine shop. that should work also. not sure how much it would cost to do that mod.
Thanks for the reply mcdonaldm. I contacted my machine shop and they said they could balance the bottom end to make it work rather cheaply so now all I have to do is gather the parts and see how it goes.
