Why would you be out a cent if the repairs are covered under warranty?

If the cats are on backorder (prolly D99), and another dealer has them, the local dealer that is fixing your truck can get them and install on your truck.

Ford will pay the local dealer additional money to cover the cost of buying the cats from another dealer and the shipping charges.

Did you do as suggested by several of us, and contact Ed Olson at Y2KFORDPARTS.COM for assistance in this matter?

I assume from reading the above that you didn't, so I just called Ed and asked him to help out.

Ed will need to know the year, engine size and whether your truck is a 2WD or 4WD.

any luck? I am in the same situation as you. I haven't had my truck since Mid JULY! I bought it in June with 5k on the motor. I can't believe I'm already having problems. The dealership told me the cats would ship on Sept 22...so I wait 3 months...and then on Sept 22..they tell me that it has been pushed back into October sometime...WTF? At least They gave me a Ford Edge SUV. Alot more space than a Ford Fucus. If anyone is in the same situation then please post and let me know what your dealership is saying. Thanks

catalytic converter backorder

I bought my 2004 Ford Expedition in June - had only 6000 miles on it, but CAR FAX was clear. When I picked it up, they told me the catalytic converter was going and they ordered it - said it should be in in about 2 weeks...June turned into July, then August...September - now they are saying December. Ford Customer Service??? There is none!

yes I did contact him, and he gave me the same info..there are no parts to be had. Believe me if a dealer had em I'd get em. We have one of the convertors, still waiting on the second.

Bite the bullett, and get a set from one of our sponsors...bearriver converters.I know its gonna be a pain to get the rtuck back, but these converters are direct bolt on replacements. I replaced both of mine on the old 97,and I think it ultimately set me back around 400 bucks.
I installed them myself, and while it did take a little "tweaking" to get the set to fit it was well worth it.

Wow, how did you find out the cat's went bad? I have an 04 also and was looking in to replacements.

I thought about eliminating the precats and replacing with a nice smooth SS mandrel bend. Mine is in CA but my O2 sensors are not on the cat itself which if i'm not mistaken is the only difference between 49 state and CA versions. I wouldn't eleiminate the rear ones, that's backwards. You want the larger regular cat. Basically a precat is for cold starts since there is an auto choke or high idle on start and the regular cat is cold it is a redunduntand backup for the 30 seconds the truck is warming up.

Anyhow if they want to fit the bill and most likely they would save money then can get approved ODMII approved Magnoflow replacements. Since your truck was not made in CA it does not follow CA smog, it gets tested as federal 49 state. It does not matter that you live in CA, it matters if the truck is 49 state or CA model when made. http://www.car-sound.com/02product/s...ayproducts.asp

You may have an issue with them not wanting to ship to CA but you dealer should be able to explain it's a 49 state model. If they don't care then http://www.car-sound.com/02product/s...ayproducts.asp but you will need to verify if the O2 bunge is on the Cat, since yours most likely is on the pipe. That means they will need to add a plug to the pipe bunges and insert the O2 sensors in the cats. ...ovcourse if yours are on the cats and you get them without that means labor to remove, drill and weld on bunges.

For improvement you want the high flow metallic converters. You should be able to pass smog with only the two main cats and eliminating the pre cats. I have an 04 and haven't had to do a smog yet but on my mazda i replaced the precat with a down pipe and it wasnt noticed in visual. It's legal to replace the cats if they are broken or after 80k miles. No car or truckneeds back pressure. People are wrong when they post this. Reducing back pressure does not take away power or torque, it moves it up higher on the curve.

I just called Magnaflow and he said teh CA models have a special coating washed on to the bricks which makes the difference and not where the O2 sensor is placed. The CA versions are also about twice as much, another reason to never buy another new vehicle in CA.

Did you notice if it gave an engine check light? The truck would not restart after it died?

Well apparently since there 4 O2 sensors you would get a check engine light if you remove the pre cats but since you are not in CA you can get the cheap 49 state metal cats for about $200/ea. The CA ones are over $500/ea (what a ripoff, Grr).

no check engine light, truck would idle rough then die. This is not a CA truck, and it has under 50k. Ford tells me that because of this "special" circumstance, they are not authorizing after market replacements to be covered under the emissions warranty. The original emissions warranty stated that after 30 days a parts repair is considered an "emergency" and after market parts could be substituted, but this is a supplier issue so they changed this clause. Or at least that's the line they are feeding us. Tomorrow was the next "deadline" so we'll see what they have to say about it, my guess is it will still not be fixed anytime soon

Ford has a customer service line. I have called them a few times when dealers did not treat me well. They will help to resolve issues but can't force a dealer to comply since they are privately owned. A phone call from Ford to the dealer has helped me though.

I don't understand how they determined the cats were the cause if there was no engine check like to diagnose the failure. Did they remove the cats and the engine fired up and stayed on? I have 94k miles on my and my O2 sensors have not tripped a cat replace code. You only have 50k and no check engine code. Have you tried another dealer?

The dealer is not the issue in this case. Ford is the issue. There are no catalytic converters to be had and they are back-ordered until who knows when. The determined it was failed cats by codes I assume, I'm not a mechanic so It was eaither a fuel problem or in this case an exhaust problem. This happened on a trip we took and this truck is 500 miles from home. Not much you can do when you are at the mercy of the only dealer for a couple hundred miles. They haven't done anything to the truck since they have no parts to replace. Read my earlier posts to understand the true magnitude of this problem.

ktprtygal,
you can post this over at blueovlenews.com.
Ford reads that forum.
so it may get some movement.
but as I stated before, the place that built the cats was shut down, and we don't have a place to build them.
This gives the company a black eye.
I worked for them for 32 years, and I have never seen it this bad.
Good luck
Russ
