When I put a fuel pressure gauge on my truck I get an erratic reading. The needle bounces between 42 and 70 psi at idle. I was going to do the FPR shim and now am unsure with these readings. I put on a tire gauge to rule out if my fuel pressure gauge was bad and got the same numbers. So my question is how do I read this or should the needle not bounce?
That's normal. Just use the highest reading you see. BTW: your readings are OK, no need to shim it.
It's mechanical pump and will produce pressure spikes. The cali emission engines have a damper that helps reduce those spikes.
