I just got back from DEQ and they say my 1983 F-250 4X4 4.9L I6 6600lb 8 lug truck needs a cat on it. I passed last time with no trouble about a cat. I looked up the part in the LMC truck 80-96 catalog and they do not show onw for a 83 just 84 and up, should I put one on from an 84? or take it to a different station and hope for the best?
The sticker on the core support should say catalyst or non-catalyst, if it says non-catalyst, take it back to them and tell them to **** off, nicely of course.
all you need are a few U bolts. I am about to go out and work on the truck, i'll get some pics.
but
yes, U bolts are all you will need.
they go around the tubes, fasten them real nice and tight. no welding required.
dirt cheap
the only mildly expensive thing will be the cat.
ok. picture #3.
that is going to be perfect.
Here's what you will need.
U bolts, 2 should do.
New cat.
a saw of any kind that can cut through metal.
Exhaust sealant, very cheap, very useful.
you have plenty of long straight pipe,
so what you will need to do, is cut out a section long enough for the new cat, (get the cat first, then start cutting obviously). electric saws work best, but if it's a hand powered one, that will work just as fine, just takes a bit longer and the pipe may come off a bit not straight haha. not to worry though.
2 u bolts should do the trick, slide it on over the pipe endings, and use the u bolts to hold it in place.
it's really simple actually.
run the truck for a bit, let it get warmed up and get under there and start listening for exhaust leaks, if you find some, which you most likely will, use the exhaust sealant around the edge of the pipe (where pipe overlaps with cat converter, or cat converter overlaps with pipe) to seal off any holes. don't be stingy, gob that stuff on as thick as it will let you.
let it sit for a bit, start and listen for leaks again. if you hear any leaks, re-apply, let dry, and repeat.
