So my limited slip fell apart and jammed up my rear end. I figured the easiest/cheapest way to fix it was to swap in a junk yard rear end. I have an '04 SC SB F250. I got this axle from an '03 Superduty but I didn't think to check what cab or box was on it.
Anyway, the driveshaft yokes are different...
Question 1) I assume I can just swap the yokes and everything will be cool? Is that correct?
Question 2) I'm just a shadetree mechanic. I know some axles have crush sleeves and some have shims. Do I need to worry about anything when I switch the yokes? What should I torque the nut to?
The rest of the swap looks like it'll be pretty darn easy, except for the whole wrestling heavy pieces of iron part..
That's odd, I wouldn't have expected different Ujoints going from a 2003 F250 to a 2004 F250 unless one was a 250LD. Are they both 10.5/10.25?
Usually you can get by if you retorque the pinion nut to the same spec as it took to remove it. It's not dead nuts on, but it's typically close enough to work well.
I don't know, but they use the same gears and I believe one was used before the 99 body and the other for 99+ superduties.
I think it's just a difference in how the ujoint is installed now that I see the pictures. It's a bolt on flange vs Strapped caps. I think the advantage goes to the bolt on flange, but it's probably not critical as long as the ujoint is the same dimensions.
If anyone can confirm crush sleeve or shims on the pinion bearing that would be great. Also exact torque on the pinion nut. If it's shims then I can just get it close enough but if it's a crush sleeve I'd like to get it dead on so I don't mess up the preload.
