A/C leak - compressor replacement, difficulty?

Hi all,

I'm driving a 2003 6.0L F250 with 163,000 miles.
Recently the a/c began blowing hot air. I took it to a local shop where they recharged it & added a dye to search for leaks.
2 days later it's blowing hot air again. Back to the shop and they tell me that the refrigerant has all leaked out and the dye shows a leak in the area of a hose / compressor connection.

I'm not familiar with that part of the engine at all. He says he won't know the extent of the problem until he gets it apart. It could be an o-ring, faulty connection, problem with hose....

Worst case it would be a new compressor, for $800 - $900. From there the news should only get better and he'll call me to let me know how it looks so I can make the call.

Anyone know how this repair goes? Can you get to the area by just removing the shroud, or does the engine need to be lifted?

Thanks in advance.

If he can't tell the diff. between a problem with a hose vrs. a compressor after dye is added, I think I would find someone else to check it out.

Manifold hoses are the suction/discharge hoses and they bolt to the top of the compressor. They are usually visible from the passenger side wheel well, just look for the piping going into the compressor. If that is an original compressor then I would be making sure the piping hasn't rubbed through and then I would replace the compressor and accumulator.
