overfill?

I have a 92 F150 with the 4.9.

I know that the manual says that it should take 6 quarts with the filter change, but this brings it a half inch over the full mark.

In my mind, I feel better trusting the manual, because I know that dipsticks are not the best 'scientific' measuring device.

what are your thoughts on this - and your experiences of dispticks with bad readings.

My mustang 302 is the same way - 5 quarts brings it over full.

And yes, I make sure that every drop that can drain out comes out.

thanks,
Matt

On my 93 4.9 I thought it said 5 w/filter. 5 puts it at about 75%up the safe range. I put in 6 the first time and it was over but didn't cause any problems.

For mine, the manual does say 5 quarts is the capacity - then has the asterisk leading to the bottom of the page:

*add one quart for filter change.

My Chilton's also says six - that is actually what made me re-read the manual - because I had just put five in...

I know its not a huge issue - just wanted to see what others do.

thanks,
Matt

I've always put 5 quarts in mine. When I first got the truck I was confused too, I added the 6th quart like the manual instructed and it brought it past full so I drained it back out.
