air cleaner box

hey guys, quick one here, hopefully somebody's looked into this a bit:

i'm wondering about the inside of the air cleaner box, that dome-shaped inner section. i assume its purpose is mainly to tone down that intake "thunking" noise, however personally extra noise is not much of an issue for me (manifold -> 2.5" collector -> 5" downward-firing stack = freakin' loud).

does anyone know if the motor will breathe any easier without that dome-shaped piece? or does it serve airflow purposes as well?

thanks,
-bryan

Find an airbox lid from an '86 or earlier truck with the 6.9 diesel, many of those didn't have the "soup bowl" you are looking to remove.

Well that's odd, my buddy's '86 ain't got one (wasn't cut off, just never installed), and in the junkyard I found quite a few like it too, which is exactly where I got my current lid with no soup bowl.

Some F series trucks did not have the soup bowl and most of the E series never had them.

But if the lid don't have a soup bowl, the bottom part of the air cleaner is necked down where it sits on the intake.

Creative sawing can increase that as well.

Dave is correct on the necked lower air box piece for trucks with no soup bowl. However, no creative sawing needed for that either - just find a lower piece off a 6.9 with a soup bowl, or any 7.3, they will all have the larger opening as they rely on the soup bowl to restrict airflow. Both me and my buddy are running 7.3 lowers with bowl-less 6.9 lids, no problems with airflow or water leaks.

If that is the one with just a different air cleaner, probably little if any gain.

Power Pack Plus was the different air cleaner and a turbo if I remember right, they did make a difference.

Mat, I wouldn't bother wasting money on any aftermarket induction kit, unless it includes a forced-induction device (turbo) - you can make your own good-flowing intake for less than $20 worth of parts.

That's at the crank tho, after all the losses in the driveline what you end up with at the rear wheels is quite different.
