[updated:LAST EDITED ON 07-Apr-02 AT 07:31 PM (EST)]I was driving one of my dads friends somewhere today and when i hit like 40mph he said i had lifter noise. (its done this for a while...but i thought it was the bearings) Well he said to keep an eye out for something called marvel mystery oil. I went and bought some, it says to add to Oil and gas. I bought (i think) 32oz's of it put like 12oz in gas and 10oz in oil cus my oil was already full. Well i was sorda suprised to see how thin this liquid was. I thought it was gunna be really thick, cus some people say they run half marvel and half 10 40 or whatever. Well anyway does this stuff really work and what is it supposed to do.
Also, would the lifter noise go away if i did a motor flush. I have been told that synthecis and motor flushing is bad on high milage engines because some of that gunk that the detergent gets rid of is holding vital engine parts together, just a thought. Thanks
I have had good results with MMO. Yes, it works to help unstick lifters, valves, and pistons rings. I use it as an engine flush when I have an old and gummed up engine. It helps clean up sludge and varnish.
Rislone works well to clean up a dirty (not filthy)engine and free up sticky and plugged hydralic lifters.I have used it at about 20% concentration. In a dirty engine use it with fresh oil for about 500 mi.then change. For sticky lifters add it when you change the oil.
I'm a fan of MM oil also. It's recommended to use when trying to free a rusted engine also. Thus it must have some penetrating oil qualities in it. The mystery isn't such a mystery anymore. It's known to have some wintergreen oil in it, thus the aromatic smell. Something about wintergreen oil that cuts sludge. Did it work for your lifters? If the lifters are worn and noisy on startup, it probably won't work, but only if they are gummed up.

Well i put it in and it really didnt do anything. At least i dotn think it did. Is there anyway that i could replace the main bearings through my oil pan. What are the differences from the main bearings and lifters. I have been told that the noise im hearing is from one or the other. thanks
My 54 Ford F100 with a 223 was running poorly when I bought it two or three months ago. I figured it was sticking valves. I put some MMO in the crankcase and resolved to pull the head when I got done with some other projects. But I would start the truck and idle it for a few minutes a few times a week.
When I pulled the spark plug wires off the spark plugs to see if I had a dead hole, I found that all cylinders were working, but some were better than others.
But gradually the engine started working better when I started it.
Well, it seems like the last sticking valve got unstuck yesterday. The truck in now running smoothly! Oo When I first got it, the engine would shake and shudder, and it wouldn't idle with the choke pushed in all the way. Now it idles ok with the choke pushed all the way in. A little more time and it will be good to drive.
If you can give the MMO some time, it might still do the trick.
I'll be putting in some 10W-30 Mobil 1 soon as I find a filter for it. That should finish the job of clearing out the lifters.
