In your post you said the compressor kicked on but immediately kicked back off. That is an indication of a completely different issue. Also unless I am mistaken you can swap ecus without needing to go to the dealer for programming. I did a swap from auto to manual trans on a 2000 ranger and swapped ecus. No programming was needed. There are about 1000 different ecus, make sure the 4 digit code matches the old one. I still do not believe the computer is your problem. Be sure to post progress after you swap it though.
To the original poster, check all the fuses underhood and in the cab. Some are not labled a/c but still effect it. If it does not solve your issue find a wiring diagram and check for power coming out of the climate control selector switch. It is a common failure point on rangers and exploders.
The PATS (passive anti-theft system) is not run by the ecu on these trucks. It is controlled by the PATS module, a completely separate system. You can swap ecus on pats equipped fords without having to be programmed. I have done so. The only time you have to have the truck programmed is if you replace the pats module or lose your keys.
I think you are just throwing good money into the wind on your truck. The Ecu does NOT control climate control or anti-theft on these trucks. Did you see my replies on your other post regarding your theft and ac system issues? Proper troubleshooting will remedy your problems, not replacing parts because you "think" its the issue.
