code reader price

I was thinking of getting a reasonable priced code reader for my F250 2002.Now when I get an engine check light I have to go to the shop to see what the problem is.Anybody using a somewhat reasonable priced reader that works half way decent ????

I have an Actron, cant remember the model or exact price or where I got from, either Pep Boys, AutoZone, or the like, but it was maybe $60, and well worth the price.

I got one from Innova. Here is the link to NAPA http://www.napaonline.com/NOLPPSE/(S...539_0244725841

I actually have the next higher model and paid a little bit more, but not only can I do OBDII, I can do Old Ford, GM, Chyrsler and Toyota/Lexus. Now I really only bought it for the OBDII because I have about 9 vehicles in my family that use OBDII. It has already save me $$$ diagnosing my troubles on my truck and wifes truck. Very user friendly and it also can do live action data as well. Basically you can watch what your vehicle is doing while it is running.

Here is the link from the manufacture for mine http://www.equus.com/product_info.ph...gory_id=1_10_7
Now dont get shell shocked by their "suggested" MSRP because I think I only paid about $190 for mine. And mine was brand new.

Nine vehicles in your family? Where do you park them all, you must have a ranch or parking lot next door or something.

It would be nice, but they are not all at my house. One is my brothers, two belong to my dad, two belong to me and my wife, 2 belong to my wifes sister and brother in law, one belongs to my soon to be sister in law and another belongs to my wifes brother.

I'm more of an AutoEnginuity person myself. My family too as a lot of vehicles(I'm the only one that actually has a "domestic" one). I would suggest the AE software bundle, tons a features, reasonably priced for what you get(and you can hunt around for cheaper, with Ford bundle already included). Now if you are talking gassers, then you could probably get by without any of the enhanced licenses that us diesel folks require as the general powertrain module will probably have anything and everything that you'll need. But with the enhanced license, you are able to run computer tests, able to reprogram speed for 40" tires, datalog, also able to reprogram certain mods etc. Although even if you just check codes a few times with one vehicle that will pay for itself going with the average dealer price of $100 a pop. Now the exact extent of all those features defers from model to model, but that's the broad strokes.

WalMart has a scanner on their pegboard. I also use a Win7 laptop interface Auterra from eBay when I want a record.

Thanks! Grandma once told me that she was disappointed when grandpa brought home their new 1956 Chevrolet Nomad. It had one of those new automatic transmissions. She said something like: "Automatics are for cripples and I am not a cripple."

I don't have a laptop, only a desktop. Otherwise, I would have seriously considered the AE products.

I have an Actron 9180. It does a ok job on simple things but I have been eyeing the AE stuff with the enchanced expansions. Wish I could afford the pro-line budle. Like some of the other posters here I seem to be family mechanic and it would be nice to have complete scan tool like that.

That can work, as well. Bluetooth, the wireless repeater to extend the bluetooth range, and if your desktop doesn't have bluetooth, a bluetooth dongle. Little bit more work and expense, but it'll still be cheaper then getting a laptop for it. The only big hurdle would be the distance from your desktop to where the truck(or vehicle) would be.

If I was to do any diagnostics at the house, I wouldn't be able to use a desktop, but at the barn I could and be within range.

Their PDA equipement is good for the gassers, but it really doesn't work well with the diesels as that only has the generic coverage and while the 6.0s were the first to have that type of coverage, that's only 7 sensors most of which are EGR related. So for me not worth it, but for a gasser it might be.

That is an easy fix. If you are the family mechanic, buy the base bundled with the ford package and as they need repairs to their vehicles get them to pitch in for the expansions that they need and before you know it you have the complete package.

<input id="gwProxy" type="hidden"><!--Session data--><input onclick="jsCall();" id="jsProxy" type="hidden">

I also got tired of paying someone to scan the vehicle and ended up with the AE scanner.
