I'm planning on changing my oil soon, and would like to flush it then and add synthetic oil.. Ive got a fuel injected 302... I've heard people say to flush with 2/5rislone and 3/5 thin oil, with ATF, etc, etc... what do you guys suggest? Also, I've been running 10w40 dino oil.. and the previous owner always used the cheapest oil available when he changed his.. should I stick with 10w40 (is it even available with mobil 1 synthetics? I didnt see it last time) and if not what should I go with, I plan on using Mobil 1 synthetic.. Thanks guys.
Doing a 2/5 Rislone or ATF should work. Also consider using MMO. I wouldn't use 10W-40. The additives required to get the oil to work over this wide of a range become a problem with they break down.
Mobil 1 10W-30 should work. Of course, use a good filter, not a Fram or Quaker State, but a NAPA, Wix, Purolator, Motorcraft, or, if you can find one, a Mobil 1.
Thanks alot. How long should I run it for with the 2/5 Rislone/ATF? Let it idle about an hour or so?? Anyways, yeah I stick to Motorcraft oil filters. Always have. I'm already running about 8-12 ounces of MMO in there right now with my regular oil, I was told this would be a good idea.. I'm told MMO is a super-lubricant.. would it hurt to add some to the transmission fluid in my AOD tranny? I've heard different responses about this.. anyways, I appreciate your response! Thanks!
I hadn't heard that MMO was ok to use in the transmission. What I know of MMO is that it contains wintergreen oil, a strong cleaning agent, as well as other lubricants and solvents.
If you're running MMO in the crankcase already you've got a good head start. I'd run the Rislone or ATF for a week or so.
If the engine hasn't been neglected, I wouldn't add that kind of oil flush. The solvents would thin the oil, possibly too much. And it probably won't all drain out when you drain the oil.
I just changed the oil on my 54 F100 223/6cyl and used Wynn's Xtend Engine Flush. I picked the stuff up for free at the local hazardous waste drop-off (seriously). Since this old truck is already pretty worn out, I wasn't afraid to try this. I found sludge in the oil filter canister and I could feel sludge when I stuck my finger into the enormous oil drain plug hole (it takes a 7/8" wrench for the plug!).
What's wrong with a Fram oil filter? I was always told they were very good filters. Are there any tests out there to compare them to the others you mentioned?
Yes, these was a comparison of oil fiters published on the web a while ago and Fram oil filters were exposed as garbage. Do a search on google for 'oil filter study'.
