well i wanted to take my custom intake to the next level
so i found out that you can plastic weld pvc pipe .
so what i did was cut the pipe into wedges, then i was able to line them up to make a nice 45 deg angle that is a ture 3 inches. then came the plastic welding to join it all together. with some body filler i smoothed it all out and paint it red to match the truck
the pics have a little sun glare, but with taking out the air snokle and adding a afe pro dry air filter, it sure does run better and with a all highway trip i can keep a firm 20 mpg. where with stock i was at 18.5 to 19
also i still have less than 20 bucks into it
also since i know how to work this pvc to weld it i was thinking of making a ram air set up like bank's offers for the 04 to 08 trucks
Is there enougth play in the rubber joints for the thing to move around. I use them rubber collers in my trade and they are pretty stiff. It almost looks like if you gave it some power it would tear or crack something.
yes they are stiff but yet they can still move with the motor. the motor really doesn't move tha much. also if you have ever installed a k@n kit or some others, they don't alow any movement they bolt down with rubber for noise and shock
the factoy tube has that spring like peice only so you can remove or check the air filter with out any tools
yeah i removed it a long time ago and with just removing it made a different in mpg and also gives it a little noise
i'm happy on how it turn out it looks really great up close
i could have spend 250 to 300 bucks on a cold air intake, but i look at it like this it takes good air flow that is cooler than under the hood like factory does vs a cai
also it ownly takes a minute to remove unlike a cai for when i go into the dealer
and also at the most i could be up 10hp and it cost me less than 20 bucks to get it unlike a cai
i would have made it out of 3in stainless exhaust pipe but my local guy's bender is one that would kink the inside bend
Personally, I don't think your first attempt looks that bad... I don't spend much time admiring my underhood area! I need to pick up the parts and give it a try... any extra MPG would be nice, and I like a throaty intake anyway.
well thay make a plastic welder and fill rods but what i did was take a solder iron which is almost the same as a plastic weld other than the style of tips
well the weld doesn't really leave a pretty joint what i did was sand the edges and use body filler to make it look nice and paint to hide it all
i still think i'm going to make one out of metal pipe when i get the time
Might be worth you doing this also. Instead of taking out my intake port so that it would suck in warm air from the engine bay i used a rubber reducer and fitted it to the intake port part and cut the nozzle of and made the hole larger and less restrictive. I now take cold air from the wheel well area as before but with a lot less restriction.
Your box must be in a different position to mine then. Mine has about a 2-3" gap between the box and the rubber curtain and gets pretty dam hot between there and the wheel well. There a noticable difference in temps after running when putting your hand between the box and curtain than putting your hand between the wheel well and curtain. Mine is 99% sealed between the engine bay and wheel well now so only cool air from outside can get sucked into the intake. Give it a pretty throaty sound now also as the enlargement of the intake increases the sound.
