Not much to detail other than telling you to be patient...LOL. When I ordered mine, I went to the dealership with a copy of my build and price from the Ford site where I built my truck online. And I took a copy of the brochure marked with the options I wanted. We also looked through the order guide at the time to make sure everything was as I wanted it when they submitted the order. After that, it was just a long wait. I ordered it in the beginning of September and it came in the day before Christmas Eve.
I've ordered three new Fords now and bought the rest off the lot. From now on, I'll order all of mine.
I ordered my '09 F250. It was my first time to purchase a new vehicle... much less custom order one from the factory. It does take a while, but if you are patient, you can get exactly what you want. I ordered because we couldn't find a Super Duty with a manual transmission and manual transfer case.
Each dealer will be slightly different. Since I went through a small town dealer, they wanted a small deposit ($250) which was applied to my normal down payment the day of delivery. They also do your credit check the day you order the vehicle so they know you can actually purchase the new vehicle you're ordering.
After you sit down with the dealership and they submit the order to Ford, they typically update you every couple of weeks. For example, they called me when they had a build date. Then they called me with an estimated ship date and a prelimanary delivery date. Finally, one afternoon they called me saying my new F250 was being uloaded off the transport.
I negotiated price the day I ordered. I told them I was looking to pay invoice price minus rebates at the time of delivery. At first they said they wouldn't make money on a deal like that, but I told them I'm not that kind of buyer and I know how to use the internet and what stuff really costs. They said my price would work. The order was placed.
7.5 weeks later the truck was delivered. That's when I told them I'd like to trade in my '99 Ranger. They appraised it, we negotiated a fair price, and added the trade in value to the $250 deposit I made earlier, and then I wrote them another check for $7000 which I also applied to the down payment.
That's the basic process I went through. I expected a lot more gnashing of teeth, but it wasn't too bad.
I have a trade in that is not paid off yet. I would expect that they would need to know that up front, but I obviously dont want to tell them.
My problem right now is just getting help. The cars for clunkers crap has the dealership so busy that I cant find an available salesperson to help me - even though I just bought our Expedition there in June. Losers...
If they don't have or won't make the time to deal with you, find another dealer. Also, I have been in the same situation before regarding a trade vehicle that wasn't paid off yet. I ordered my truck and when it came in, I told them that day that I had a trade. Nothing underhanded about it...I just hadn't decided yet whether or not I was going to keep the other truck. By the time my new truck got there, I decided I didn't need two.
It's your choice about when you reveal that you have a trade-in vehicle.
It depends on where in Alaska. You have to remember Alaska is the FOUR times the size of Texas. If he is near Anchorage he has some choice and if he is in or near Fairbanks he does but your kind of stuck other places. Thought when I was looking I had no problems with idea of buying a plane ticket to Anchorage and driving my truck 1000 miles home. It is just nice to buy from a local dealer.
I am not in Alaska. That is where I call home, but I currently live right between Baltimore and D.C. Yep, if God where to give the planet an enema, he would stick it right here, lol. Plenty of Ford stores though. I like this one that I am working with, they seem much more like a small town dealership, which I like.
I bought my current truck in AK though. We lived in Anchorage and there was a dealer in Anchorage and another in Wasilla. Fairbanks is a 6 hour drive and there are a couple dealerships there too.
