older engine w/blowby

My '68 240 has a lot of blowby it looks like the last owner only did a hone and ring job, so its not sealing well. So what weight oil should I be using? I've been using 20w50 in my '85 Nissan PU which has 260,000 miles on it with no tear-downs and it still doesn't use any oil so should I try it in this 240? The Penn 10w40 I've been using seems to thin to help with ring seal would the 20/50 make a difference? I'm going to rebuild this motor soon but I'm just trying to make it last a little longer.

I'd skip the multi-weight and go with a straight 40w.Depending on where you live, you may have to change to 30w in the winter.

I wasn't sure about using the straight weight oil because I read that when using single weight oil in motorcycles like my single cyl 500cc that some sludge would build up because these bikes were not originally equiped with flow thru filters and instead utilized sludge traps because the single weight was non detergent based so the dirt and impurities would gather in the traps instead of circulating thru the motor. So do modern single weight oils use the same detergents as multi-viscosity oils?

Yes, modern name-brand single weight oils carry the latest API "SL" rating. I agree, use the SAE 40, as long as temperatures are above 60F, SAE 30 above 40F.
