Oil consumption
What quantity of oil consumption is considered normal with 2500-3000 miles between oil changes. I have a 01 SuperCrew 5.4L with 15000 miles on it. It's due for an oil change, but I had to put a quart of oil in it over the weekend. I've been keeping the change interval around 3000 miles, give or take a few hundred miles. My wife drives the truck daily because it has the car seat for the baby and her commute only puts about 3, yes 3 miles a day on it. We live and work on a military base which means that our commutes are very short. Therefore it doesn't get to normal op temp before it gets shut down. Could this cause more oil consumption that normal?Glenn
I've got the Motorcraft in there now (because it was on sale), but I'm switching back to the heavier grade Mobil next time.
Man, I don't feel right about using 5W-20 water, regardless of what Ford recommends.
Anyway, it seems fairly normal for some of the Ford modular engines to use what seems to be a lot of oil, so I don't think you really have a problem.
My '96 F-250 460 with 120,000 miles uses less than a quart of 10W-30 every 3,000 miles.
Go figure.
It's a Ford.
Oil consumption will vary between engines, even of the same type. My 5.4 uses virtually no oil between changes. (3000 mi.)My 302 in my 85 Mustang Gt will use a quart of oil every 2500. All with about the same driving habits.
The dealer will probably tell you a quart every 1000 miles is normal, although most new engines will use less than a quart between changes. Anyway, I think a quart of oil every 3000 miles is OK, especially the way you are driving the vehicle.
Just my .02.
