Guys...I have a 7.3 ltr which has been running awesome.....but I have a fluid leak which appears to be coming from behind the harmonic balancer. It is definitely coolant as it's pretty green....I notice a small amount last week...now there is plenty all over the ground. I took the radiator cap off and noticed that there is little rise in the level, enough to overflow...but ther isn't any bubbles as such.
Is there by any chance, a welsh plug in the block behind the harmonic balancer, or is the leak above and just becoming obvious as it runs.
Welcome to FTE!! A few things may cause that. A leaky heater hose is one, the weep hole in the water pump may cause that or even a bad water pump gasket. Another cause may be the upper neck housing the thermostat but you would probably see that. Is there oil in the coolant or coolant in the oil?? Someone else will probably chime in as cooling problems seem to be really popular right now. Incidentally, there is a large plate mounted to the front of the engine, sealed by (according to the Ford manual) avation permatex # 3 that sandwiches between the waterpump and block that may be an issue too. Anyone else have more experience with this??
I'm pretty much leaning towards the pump, or something in that rea...just fot off the phone with the service guy at our local Ford dealership...he's thinking pump, but to be sure, she' booked in fora pressure test on Tuesday morning...fingers crossed..
BTW, the service time to change a water pump...4 hrs..the pump $100.

Truck or Van??? It takes me a weekend in my van (taking my time and being too obsessive) which includes cleaning and painting everything. The weephole is located directly over the crank which would explain it. Please let us know what you find.

The vehicle is a VAN....so I'm imagining it's not the easiest thing to work on.
As an update on my issue...I drove it a fair way on the weekend, towing a 30' trailer...the temp remained as always...perfectly in the middle of the gauge..
But what I have now been able to identify...and this is weird...the leakage is only happening when the vehicle is cold...When the engine is running, and after the long haul...no leakage....let her cool...and there you have it...dripping out all over the ground.
The pressure test tomorrow should identify the problem...I hope
There are several special tools and notes when doing a water pump....... left hand thread on the fan clutch assy .......torques of bolts into the front cover and bolt lengths in the 2 upper and 2 lower bolts where possible contact with the cam gear and IP gear are located. Those 4 shorter bolts also require special sealant on the threads and head ends.
PM me your email addy if you can and I will fwd the info if you want it.
