The second video sounded about right.
The first video sounded about right for the timing advance being on, but it did sound like you may need a new glow plug or two when you first started it.
E4OD and a non working tach is bad news if the light is flashing.
Limp mode is not meant for normal driving, and may cost you a tranny rebuild.
mine is a noisy critter as well especially the first start of the day.i have a small air intrusion issue so i get a little more noise but in a minute or 2 the funny knock goes away.i probably need to redo the return lines before it gets any worse.i would check your GP'S and do a return line kit to start out for the real hard start ya got.but i dont think its exactly abnormal
hey before you go out buying a new tach sensor (although with 311000 miles its prolly not a bad idea), try greasing (just plain old green/white grease will do fine) both connectors for the tach sensor. one is right by the oil pump housing 6" from the sensor, and the other is on the passenger side fender right up near the front of the engine bay. follow the wires from the tach sensor and you'll see the connector.
when you're driving about 40mph in OD does the truck shudder at all? mine used to be fine and then it would feel like it just dropped out of gear for a split second and then jumped back in. if so, this will fix your problem likely.
try hitting the plugs with some highly evaporative contact cleaner before greasing too, can't hurt.

It kind of does seem like its shifting in and out of OD. When my grandpa owned it, it would always blow this one fuse that controlled the radio and interior lights. He always figured thatswhat was going on with the transmission was related in some way to that fuse. I think their may have been a wire somewhere that was shorting out. It has stopped blowing that fuse now.
johnboggs21, how does your transmission shift? I noticed your tachometer is reading 0 rpms at idle, which means your tach sender on the engine is malfunctioning, and the E4OD absolutely hates messed up tachs - do you get funky shift schedule every so often? if she still shifts ok, may wanna look into fixing the issue before she goes nuts on you
Sometimes it tends to shift kind of funny and other times it seems about right. It does shift kind of hard from 1st to 2nd. Im going to see about this tach sender.
Thanks again guys your advice is much appreciated.
There should be a connector going to it. The one on mine comes over with the same wiring "harness" as the alternator connections and injection pump connectors. Does your a/c work? I'm assuming no...
The first picture is where the AC connection should be. That is your AC condenser. Without that connection plugged in your AC wont work as mentioned above.
The last picture is definately part of the problem if not the only problem with your tach. That is the tach sensor and the wiring looks shot! I gave away my last one but they can be acquired without breaking the bank.
