My buddy was pulled over for no apparent reason. The gave him 3 tickets, 1) no "Commercial Vehicle Operator’s Registration Certificate". $335.00. 2) fail to display Commercial Vehicle Operator’s Registration Certificate. $240.00. 3) fail to complete daily inspection report. $240.00. Well he didn't give them any attitude, he was just floored with these tickets. Now his vehicle is a 2001 F350 CC, duelly. This is his personal truck and uses it as his daily drive. I have been trying to get some info on the H.T.A. regarding his truck. It is registered as 5200 kilograms. Does anyone know anything about the weight limits for these trucks and registering them. If any Canadian has any infor for me (him) please post.
Holy Crap they really nailed h him good. Canadian laws must be stricter then US Laws. Maybe you should post this over in the Canadian chapters. Thats a pretty active forum. Those guys will probably know exactly what the deal is.
That sucks, some cops are cool peeps and some are total dicks.. I had one NYS trooper give me 3 tickets on a thursday and then pulled me over on the following saturday and gave me the same 3 tickets. The judge saw it and threw out all 6 of them. Bet that was like a slap in the face to the cop... Hope this works out for your buddy...
i think he should fight that one. unless he was/is towing more than the truck is allowed by the manufacturers specs, its a normal vehicle, just a little large. perhaps the G-ment just snuck a law in lately though to try and get larger vehicles off the road...wouldn't suprise me.
i know here in saskatchewan large duallies are very common. many of them have farm plates, but even those who don't haven't ever had issues.
In Florida (and it's going to be kind of similar in the most other states), the same law that lets retirees drive the big pusher motorhomes with a standard license, allows me to drive my personal Superduty without a CDL. If you have access to RV parks or clubs, you might ask there if they need to have a commercial license.
Here in taxachusetts if you have dual rear wheels or are over 10,000 lbs you are commercial, period.
Doesnt matter if its dual rear wheels on a volkswagon, its still commercial.
And anything that falls into that class requires you to carry a dot medical card.
Or if you use a f250 for work i.e., snowplows, tool boxes, ladder racks, etc, it too must be registered commercial, but no health card.
They are cracking down on landscapers that tow trailers with their f250's as a combined weight of over 10,000 lbs and they also need a dot medical card.
You have to go to an inspection station that does 10,000 lb and over vehicles to have a dot type inspection for $129.00 instead of like all other vehicles that have a sticker at any gas station for $29.00.
You need to carry 2 wheel chocks, 3 triangle safety reflectors, a fire extinguisher, and a first aid kit, period.
Got to be too much of a hassle to keep the f350.
Which is why I dropped the f350 for a f250.
But like someone else said I can drive my 44,000 lb prevost bus conversion motorcoach with no special license because its private.

I have seen a few posts from California folks that have had issues registering their Super Duties because the GVWR puts them into a "commercial" category. It is rather ironic that you can drive an RV larger than a school bus on a standard license, but a Super Duty can require a CDL.
What puts all pickups (even the hybrid 1/2 truck/1/2car Hondas and Chevy Avalanche) in California in the commercial category- is the bed. If you install a camper, you can file a form and get non-commercial (but you can't later remove the camper).

They tag me for 53 for my SW 350. They asked for chocks. It's 10,800 The sticker is still actually 29 (right on the DMV site) but they can (and will) add for a service charge which can get you the 129. I've been through more level one DOT checks with my Pete but was never asked for a Med Kit.
The law is a bit confusing. A dually is a com. vehicle unless it's private. Your bus for example. If it has 5 wheels on the ground it's considered commercial. Which is it?
From the DMV definitions of a com vehicle
Commercial Motor Vehicle shall mean any motor vehicle which is not a private passenger motor vehicle, antique motor car, motorcycle, auto home, house trailer, taxicab, ambulance, hearse, livery
vehicle, or school pupil transport vehicle.
(e) Any vehicle which has a vehicle weight, or curb weight, of more than six thousand pounds, as per the manufacturer's description of said vehicle, unless such vehicle is a sport utility vehicle or passenger van, or a pickup truck or cargo van meeting the definition of private passenger vehicle; or
(f) Any vehicle which has five or more wheels on the ground.

I did the same, buying the 250 to keep it under 10k. I am registered com. thou and being a work truck I have all safety gear allready, just dont need to deal with the DOT.
You guys make me wonder, do these commercial vehicle laws only apply to residents? Meaning if I happen to drive through your state will I be required to have any of this commercial stuff if my truck is registered non comm in Ohio? I think mine spec'd at 10,800 and I will be driving it to NY atleast a couple times a year.

Pretty sure you only need to deal with the DOT out off state is if you have DOT #s on your truck. Here in MA they are cracking down on Trucks who are not reg comm but use the truck for work. You can get a regular 2 yr plate for $75 but my Commercial plate is $110 every yr. you know the state is not going to stand for anyone cheating them out of money espiecialy when they are in such deep dedt. They are cracking down on anyone who has a tool box or any kind of tools in the truck during the week. Gota pay for that great health care system we have
