trying to decide on downpipe...

a buddy of mine recently had 5" exhaust put on his truck and then quickly decided he wanted stacks. so i bought it from him at a good price, i basically have everything but the downpipe and a piece of extension to make up for going from a single cab to a four door. i have a bone stock truck, but may put a small chip on eventually. my question is what size downpipe should i buy? 3.5 or 4". or would i be just as well off to keep the stock downpipe 3"? thanks.

Your stock downpipe is already 3.5 inch. However, it has a couple small bends that aren't really necessary. An aftermarket 3.5 downpipe has a slightly straighter path that provides for better flow. Unless you're really going for a big time Hp upgrade via a chip, the 3.5 downpipe will serve you well. Going to a 4 inch downpipe will result in a loss in bottom end torque for a stock to mildly tuned truck. Additionally, some firewall work may be needed for it to fit. Some trucks require a little firewall work while others don't. It's a crap shoot. Personally, I'd go for the 3.5 inch downpipe.

I am pretty sure the stock downpipe is 3" on these trucks. Maybe I'm wrong though.

Okay. I stand corrected. I just went out and measured the downpipe I pulled off my truck last year. It measures 3.25 inches at the turbo outlet and then necks down to about 3 inches. I thought I read somewhere that it was 3.5 inches. Man, my memory isn't what it used to be.
