I might be putting a new torque converter in my C6 for towing and would like to know what company makes a good one and what stall speed do I want for towing around 12,000lbs?
can't answer you questions, but i have a new one still in the box that i bought years ago, but ended up never installing and now the truck is gone. i'll sell it cheap. i don't know the specs, but i'll check the box to see what it says.
What engine do you have, and what is the specs of your truck. Low stall speeds may not be ideal for your truck in towing as the torque converter essentially creates a ratio that lowers the overall gearing, but you want it to stall before you red-line the motor. An oem torque converter would be sufficient for towing, but are the internal clutches and seals of the transmission able to put up with it, i.e. young enough.
A shift kit would help alot in creating a little more pressure for the clutch engagements to reduce clutch and band slippage from towing a heavy load, but again how new are the seals and clutchs so that higher pressures can be handled inside the trans. Then adding the higher pressure in the trans leads to increased heat so an additional trans cooler would be needed outside the stock cooler in the radiator to help keep the tranny cool.
My truck is a 96 F350 4x4 with the 460 and C6. It has 3.55 axle gears. The tranny was rebuilt about 6,000 miles ago. The warranty is up on the tranny so I can't take it back and complain but it has started acting up. When I push on the gas to get moving during normal stop and go, the truck revs up a little and it takes a lot to get moving. If I then push down almost half way down on the accelerator, the truck will brake loose and take off like it was a being held back and then released. I was thinking it was the brakes dragging but on level ground at idle, when I put it in drive and let off on the brake to take off, it will start rolling just fine without any drag like it would if the brakes were dragging. It feels like I'm constantly towing a heavily loaded down trailer on take off until something lets loose and off I go. I think it might be the torque converter but could be wrong. Any thoughts?

Can someone answer this guy? I'm in the same boat as him.
My 82 is doing that when cold and sitting over night. I have been told the converter is draining back into the trans.
I also need to do something.
Hope this helps

I too was thinking it was the converter. My C6 housing cracked due to vibration when my u-joint let loose. I had a spare C6 lying around so I had it rebuilt and I think the guy used the wrong type of converter or something. In all the confusion and rush of trying to get my truck back together I don't even recall the guy at the shop asking any info about my truck in order to pick out a suitable torque converter. It made my truck feel sluggish after the rebuild. My stock 460(with headers) in my 96 F350 always had plenty of power to move anything even with 285/75/16's tires. After the tranny was rebuilt my truck would be sluggish pulling a 3500lb boat up a hill. Not an overly steep hill, just one about 20 degree for about 2 tenths of a mile. At the bottom I would be going 45mph. At the top, a dismal 25mph!!!
