My 1999 F-150 4.6 Auto 140,000 miles, has a check engine light that just came on. Autozone pulled a P0401 code. Just wondering if anyone could save me some time with their experience and knowledge. The truck runs fine, I would just like to correct the fault. Thanks.
Exhaust gas recirculation malfunction detected...Most likely the DPFE sensor is bad.Could also be the egr valve needs a good cleaning. You can get a DPFE sensor from Ford,or one of our sponsors www.rockauto.com
I replaced mine with one of rockauto,s and its worked flawlessly.
The OEM DPFE sensor was a cast aluminum unit, and subject to corrosion from the exhaust gasses, and subsequent moisture. The replacement from rockauto is plastic.Easy replacement..2 bolts, and two hoses(small)..hope this helps.
Given the milage, take the cheap route first. Take off the throttle body and check the EGR ports where they enter the throttle body. They frequently plug and will give the P401 code. Seems I have to do my 97 at least once a year. Same code. If the ports are clear the DPFE is a likely culprit.
Replaced the DPFE sensor. So far no check engine light. The old sensor had all kinds of corrosion built up on the hose passages. Thanks for your help guys!
When I pull the hose to the erg, I feel a weak rapid pulsing vacuum. Good vac to the solenoid that powers the. Pulled the erg and looks clean. pulled the hoses to the DP sensor and can feel exhaust, but not strong blasts.
Does this give any clues? How big a job is it to clean the erg passage?
