F-250 rear axle swap in an Excursion

I have a 2000 EX V-10 with 3.73 gearing with 35in BFG's, pulling a load it is quite heavy and will not stay in O/D much less, even unloaded, hard to keep in O/D. I know that most trucks were available in 3.73, 4.10 and 4.30 gerar ratios, just wondering if the axles would be a straight swap or if there are any other concerns as well. I am assuming that similar year model axles should be the same.
Also, I am getting about 1850-1865 RPM's at 70MPH and about 1965-1980@75 in O/D, so I am thinking that the 4.30 would be a good consideration or would the 4.10's work. Looking for power and mileage, if that's possible? Thanks

4.30 seems to be the gear of choice for the V-10, I'll let someone else weigh in on a direct swap. A tape measure should answer your question.

I recomend 4.56 with your size tires! I swapped to the 4.30`s from 3.73 and I run the stock size tires. I could almost have gone with the 4.56 gears myself! I am going to swap to 285`s next year so I should still be OK. BTW, I tow a 32' 9200lb TT. so the 4.30 gears made a huge improvement in towing performance.

Skip the 4.10`s and go to a 4.56 gear.

I would go for the 4.56:1 gears too but nothing came with those. He's asking if he can swap the whole axle from another vehicle instead of regearing.

Why do you want to swap the whole piece?

the v10s also came with 3:73s, i have them too.

i did this on my explorer, swaped in different axles because it was MUCH cheaper then having the diff work done.

a tape measure will be your friend.........

i'd try and find a stock set up with 4.30's rather than the 4.10's. or if at all possible find an axle that has already had the swap done with 4.56 or 4.88 gears.

+1.

Just have a new set of ring and pinion gears installed. Just remember, if you have a 4x4, you need to have a matching R&P gear installed in the front diff too.

It's called price. Regearing is at least $750 per axle. You could probably find an axle much cheaper than that from a different vehicle if you could put it in yourself.

thats my plan, with my explorer i paid $600 for 4:10 front and rear axles complete. having mine re-geared would have been almost $2000. thats a HUGE differance!

i've been keeping an eye out for 4:30/ls rear and a 4:30 front axle from wrecked SD's for my excursion then just swap them out. i can do the swap myself in a day. insted of paying a crap ton for re-gearing plus time without my truck.

$750? Wow, here in my area a quality R&P swap out cost around $450 per.

Read the post above yours. That seems more the going price. It seems that $750 per axle is considered cheap.

Wow from what I have been seeing, most axles are going for $1000 or more per axle, might just be easier to do a ring and pinion swap, but then again, there is nobody around here that will do that for $450 either, looks like my options are getting expensive again!
Also, it appears the axles in similar years are the same, only different is placement of the calipers on the rear axle. Mark
