I am having the same problem with my expidition stereo. I start my truck and the stock system (recently added aftermarket cd changer)
plays fine until I put it into either reverse or drive. Park & neutral it plays fine. Also when driving sometimes the windshield wiper light on the dash & 4x4 light light up and go off. Any ideas ? I can also hear a clicking/or some sort of noise coming from below the steering column area I think. Not sure if the noise is coming from the fuse box or not. Fuse (25amp) is okay. bCould it be the stereo relay, ignition switch, or ?
I've seen the Transmisison Range Sensor (TRS) cause the radio problem. The TRS is on the side of the transmission where the linkage goes into the trans. It has one connector and 2 screws holding it on. The wiper/4X4 problem could be the 4x4 lockout switch on the transfer case. It is on the driver's side of the transfer case at the front near the top....above the front driveshaft. If you replace the switch also drain and refill the transfer case. Just a bit of moisture in it is enough to cause switch problems.
It could also be a GEM problem. The GEM (generic electronic module) is attached to the back of the fuse box and sometimes will get water in from a windshield leak. The water causes all sorts of problems like you've described. The fuse box can also get water in it causing similar problems.
I would probably start by unplugging the 4x4 lockout switch and see what happens. It's the easiest thing to try. Next you could start the truck in Park with the park brake on, then disconnect the TRS and see what happens.
Or you could just take it to your friendly neighbourhood Ford dealer and have them check the TRS either on their NGS or WDS scanner. They can also check and see what the 4x4 switch is doing when the problem happens and can do some GEM tests too.
