Smile I finally fixed my E4OD TRANS

My 1994 F-350 auto trans was down shifting and searching for a gear, I took the truck to my local Ford dealer. They charged me $500 for a new solenoid pack and then went out of business, I then changed the MLPS or neutral safety switch ( that's what auto part stores call it) and still had the erratic shifting problem! I even had trans shops telling me the trans was bypassing internally and $1,200 bucks could fix it. Two weeks ago I stopped into a liquor store and the owner made a comment about my truck, saying it was in nice condition, I said " thanks", but too bad it doesn't run as well as it looks and told him about the trans problems. He said the sensor on top of the rear diff was the problem, I spent $20 on a new sensor and fixed the problem! Hopefully someone else can use this info. Dave

You think Ford could of picked up on that, they just wanted more of your money to keep that dealership open. Congrats on the fix, score one for the little guy.

Yeah, you would think they could have figured that out! FoMoCo said they would honor the warranty, but there would still be the fee to hook to the scope and if the problem was something other than the previous work performed, there would be additional charges. I was getting so mad about this trans problem that I went out and bought a complete ZF manual trans setup to install in my truck. Now that it's fixed I'll hold off on the change over at least until someone makes an offer on the E4OD that's in my truck. I have it listed in the classifieds here. Dave

Was your speedo acting erratic at the time the trans was acting up?

No it wasn't which I still don't understand. Auto parts man wasn't sure what the sensor even controlled. ABS? Speedometer? ECM?

The speed sensor on the rear axle provides input for the ABS, Trans, and PSOM which feeds the speedo and computer, hard to believe it could affect one without the others.

Everything worked fine, except trans. It was hunting for gears and hard shifts. The liquor store owner had the same problem with his truck, which is why he knew how to fix mine.

The old sensor that I removed was smooth on the sides, the new FoMoCo has an octagon shape. Maybe an updated version?

Don't these trans' have an output shaft speed sensor? the ole plastic wheels or reluctor ring?

The speed sensor is nothing really but a magnet. A lot of times, one can get away with wiping off the sensor, then reinstalling. Sometimes metal shavings from the transfer case stick to the magnet fouling up the sensor. Wiping the shavings off can fix it a lot of times. But, it can also mean something is wrong in the transfer case causing excessive wear. If you do it this way, then disconnect the neg. batt. cable after to clear codes. Even if you fix it, it will still behave like it's broken until the computer rechecks it. I am also confused why the speedometer didn't jump around also.

The sensor I replaced is on the rear diff, no transfer case shavings getting back there. Truck only has 59,000 original miles on it, transfer case is fine. The original sensor had alot stronger magnet than the new one I installed. Speedo never jumped or registered incorrectly, all I know is after installing this sensor I can drive my truck with no problem. Evidently this sensor should be 1 of the first things changed if your trans is having the same symptoms as mine, it's also the cheapest item to replace. (420) bucks. I'm signing off. Dave

Sorry! I meant the differential, not the transfer case!
