[updated:LAST EDITED ON 11-Dec-02 AT 10:24 AM (EST)]Yes...Mine does the same thing. I haven't looked into it yet but mine appears to be coming from the passenger front door. It is very annoying from an otherwise quiet running vehicle.
Do you happen to hear a funny noise when driving in 2HI like me too (if you have 4x4)? I posted a message a few posts back that documents it.
Interesting you hear a rattle on the passenged side. I think it is the passenger seat in my '03. The noise goes away when someone is sitting in the seat.
You know I think you may be right because the few times I have had a passenger I don't remember ever hearing the noise. It could also be that they were putting pressure on the door armrest and that kept it from making the noise as well. If I find out what it is I will be sure to post it. Next time I have a passenger I will have them try a few things to see if we can locate it.
A week ago today, I just purchased a '03 Expedition EB. And today, I took it in for the very same door rattle that you mentioned (295 miles on the odometer).
I noticed that the rattle was coming from the window, occurred when I was going between 60 and 70mph and stopped when I applied pressure to the window. I let the Service Writer know about my revelations only to have him call me a few hours later mentioning that the Tech was unable to replicate the rattle. I said fine and picked up the vehicle.
As soon as I hopped on the freeway, the rattle started. The rattle goes away when traveling 60mph or less, or when I'm over 70mph. It appears to be the window and/or window track.
See if my revelations prove to be correct and thank god I'm not the only one with the driver-side rattle. Maybe Ford will issue a TSB on this.
Mine happens at nearly any speed. When I noticed mine doing this (at about 30mph) I reached over and grabbed the passenger door handle and just pulled it toward me with maybe 5 to 10 lbs of pressure and all the rattling stopped. Therefore I know that the rattle I am experiencing is in the door and not the seat. I would be curious to know if you guys get the same results if you test this also. I am not sure what is actually rattling in the door yet though.
Mine was just in the shop last week for a similar problem, what I had found was the headliner was rattling. The passenger could put their hand on the headliner it would stop. I marked this spot with some masking tape labeled "rattle", since I didn't want to get the old, "unable to duplicate customer complaint." I hate that!
FYI. The service writer told me he had had this exact some problem on two other Expeditions that they had just worked on.
Just found out that the seatbelt clip rattles against the door or seat when a passenger is not in the seat. I slid the buckle up out of the way and the sound disappeared. Sure sounded like a door rattle.
Just curious if you guys are still experiencing the drivers side door rattle or have resolved it. We picked up a 03 about 1 month ago and had a rattle in the roof liner as well as the drivers side door. The dealer was able to fix the roof rattle, but after 2 attempts still has not been able to fix the door. It's only noticable when going over bumps and it's driving me nuts since I find myself actually trying to hear it at this point. If anyones found the problem please, please let me know so I can pass this along to the dealer for the fix. Thanks alot in advance.
My 03 Expy is just over 2 weeks old with 700 miles & the front passenger door has the same rattle. I also have some type of
metal squeak that seems to be coming from the front passenger area as well. It sounds like a bird "chirp" & it's driving me crazy!! I'll see what the dealer says when I take it in this Wednesday.
Exactly DSmooth. The rattle is similar to tempered glass tapping against metal. Mine will rattle going over large bumps, but mostly when I drive around 70 mph. I notice the rattle happens more as air pressure against the Expy increases. I can eliminate the noise by pressing my hand against the window. It is a noise that is difficult to duplicate while driving around town. The dealer needs to take it out on the highway, preferably a rough one on a windy day.
I have 15k miles on my 03 Expy.
DOOR RATTLE. Have had this -- if it's the same thing -- since I got the truck. Mostly or only over bumps. It almost sounds like the door or the window are loose. Have not tried to get it fixed.
SQUEEK. I have a squeek that I thought came from up front somewhere, but finally tracked it down to the middle seat in the second row -- it comes from the track that allows that seat to move forward. If I pull that seat forward the rattle goes away. Again, I have not had a chance to ask the dealer about this.
