Fuel Question

I've got a 2005 Excursion Eddie Bauer with the 6.0L PSD. I have a couple fuel options in my area, and I'm looking for an opinion as to which to use. No matter what I'll be using the Power Service additive. There are three choices, Ultra Low Sulfur (15ppm or less), Low Sulfur (500ppm or less), or Gold Diesel which is an Ultra Low Sulfur with some sort of additive package. If the engine was made in 2004, which was pre-Ultra Low Sulfur, would it be better for the engine to run the Low Sulfur? Or should I run the Ultra Low? Should I believe that the Gold Diesel claims of an additive package that increases power and mileage by 5%? Thanks.

Hey, Schmitty!

I have LSD right here in Eagle. I haven't found that there is any difference in mileage when I compare my purchases of ULSD to LSD. I haven't found that any kind of a premium diesel has improved my mileage either.

I haven't came up with any actual measureable difference when using additives that I can replicate to increase mileage either. That's my data from my short bus that I always had at the track and now my Excursion that replaced the short bus and is my everyday driver.

I keep wishing that one of the additive might actually show a consistent improvement, but I can't come up with data that tells me one works out of the many that I've used. The ones that I used that I thought might have promise were the Opti Lube summer blend and Dipetane. I would like to try them again to add to my data, but I look at the cost too. With diesel as "cheap" as it is currently, I would like a better return on the product.

Yeah, with the cold we had last winter, I do use Power Service then for the anti gel.

I have a 7.3 vs your 6.0.

Schmitty,

Same with me, 2005 with the 2004 motor. Three years in Wisco and I used Power Service year round, both white and gray jug. I've also used the Motorcraft additive, I don't know if I ever saw mileage differences.

As far as the fuel is concerned, you are putting in the additive so use the fuel you want. I wouldn't expect the Low Sulfur to be around too much longer. In my area I don't see it at all. And if a fuel says you can get 5% better mileage, use it, and verify it. But don't stay up late at night waiting for it to happen...

I would use the ULSD, less ash and less junk to foul up the ERG system.

If you had a 7.3, give it some LSD; since you have a 6.0 ULSD is better for the EGR system.
