fuel pump or electrical problem?

my 97 expy was running fine when i parked and went in the store. when i came out and tried to start. it started but idled horribly for about 10-15 seconds, then died. i had it towed home. i checked inertia switch, checked fuel pump fuse. i have removed the fuel filter and cranked it but no gas coming out of line when doing so. should i go ahead and drop the tank and replace the fuel pump. what should i check[if anything] before i do that? i read to check fuel pump relay for voltage. what kind of tool do i need? i have a obd 2 and it is not throwing any codes with ignition turned on. can i check electric current to the pump at the harness by the gas tank without dropping the tank? i really want to be sure it is the pump before i replace it. just before i stopped at the store i was having a problem with the brake caliper freezing up on me on the rear wheel by the tank. it had gotten so hot that i could not touch the wheel. could that heat have done something. it happened after a harder than usual stop at a light. after i stopped for a bit and turned the car off, it loosened up. i know this because it was not surging while driving and the wheel was not hot like before after driving. but damage may have been done earlier? thanks for any help. gonna kick back and watch brickyard and wait for feedback! hope goodyear got the tire problem figured out..

sounds like your fuel pump is shot, and time to re-grease the rear calipers.

Perhaps the heat melted a hole in the fuel line, but either way, you need to figure out a way to see if the pump is actually working.
