Another tach question

I tried the search but could'nt find what i was looking for.
Installed a sun tach on my '74.I start the engine the tach works fine,then after 3 or 4 minutes it reads zero.Do I have a bad tach,bad coil or what? Checked the wiring and everything is hooked right.
Thanks for the help.-Ken

Is it set on 8 cyl.? most tachs are universal and work for either 4,6,8 cyl. depending on where you set it.

Yes,I set it on 8 cyl. and even tried it on the 6 cyl. setting to see if it would make a differance but it did'nt.

Does it suddenly drop to zero, or is it gradual? New tach or used? Sounds like an internal overheating problem on the tach. I'd imagine if you had a bad coil, your truck would start to run poorer about the same time the tach dropped to zero.

It's a used tach.probably 10-12 years old.And it drops grad. in about 4 min.

Probably a dried out capacitor, especially if it sat in the sun on a hot dashboard for a few years. Caps should have values printed right on them, if you want to try and replace it. If all you want is a cheap tach without the fuss, Harbor Freight sells a $20 "fast & furious" mini-tach that works well enough in my truck (I even modified the electronics to change to a 4000RPM scale).
