Steering Problems
Please help. I have an '05 F350 4X4 with steering with a mind of its own. Intermittently, (Usually after a hard left or right turn) The steering will not return an I have to manually bring it back to center. after it does this it is nearly impossible to go straight and the truck will jet to the left or to the right. It is hard to explain. I have been told it is the power steering box, power steering pump, hubs, U- joints. I have been told everything that it might be. I have seen posts on here that are very similar to what is happening to me but without conclusion. I talked with a mechanic yesterday and he said it was absolutely the U-joints. and said they were 100.00 bucks a piece and 4 hours work. Is this diagnosis feasible? I would greatly appreciate any input. I checked myself and the U-joints wobble and are very hard to turn. I was going to attempt the repair myself, but was told by the mechanic you needed specialized tools that are very expensive. I appreciate all the help. Thank you.

Have you done a visual inspection yourself? Try jacking the entire front end and turing the wheel completely to one side. Check for anything that may make contact of get hung up. If you have a secong person that can turn the wheel while you are watching it will be a great help.

I have inspected them. The passenger side one turns freely when the wheels are straight. when turned either right or left they do not turn freely. I am sure they are sticking. Could they be the only cause of the steering issue? do I need special tools?
