Programmer and Smoking ?

I'm thinking about getting an EDGE Juice Platinum w/ Attitude programmer for my truck. It's an 04 250 6.0 crew cab short bed FX4 with a cold air intake and straight pipes with no cats. If I get the programmer I'm probably just going to use it mostly to help with mpg's and some to help with pulling. I am 19 years old so I might get into some small races with a few rice burners and mustangs here and there, and I might sometimes use some of the higher hp and tq settings. If I do this, what kind of upgrades might I need to do (like for the tranny or other components) to make sure I don't cause any major damage and really cost myself some money. I know that a lot of you will have your opinions as to whether or not programmers acutally help with mpg's or not or whether they do anything besides mess up the engine, but I really don't care, I just want this thread to be about me getting a programmer and upgrades I might need to do.

Also, with my truck the way it is now, It doesn't matter if it's in Neutral or Drive, no matter how much I lay on the gas, my truck produces very little, and sometimes absolutely no smoke. I'd like my truck to be able to do it...I kinda think it's cool to be able to do. Why wouldn't my truck be able to do this? Would a programmer help? What would help it be able to do this?

Thanks in advance for any information you have,
Andrew

Welcome to the site Andrew!

First off, you won't find any love for the Edge Juice here - those things are notorious for tearing up transmissions since they do nothing to the transmissions tuning to compensate for the power they add. If you must have more power you are far better off to go with something like an SCT and have custom tunes written by a reputable tuner - there are a number of them around, just do a search and you'll turn up more reading than you can do in a night on the subject.

As far as the mileage increase, you won't see it if you're going to be racing around town, but if you take it easy you will see improvements.

Now - on to the smoke issue. The reason it doesn't smoke is because it's not supposed to. That's as far as I'll go on that subject.

Sounds like you got a whole lot of money just laying around.... pass some this way. If your going to get a tuner go with the SCT and if you do get a tuner at your age there's not gonna be any "i just got it for gas mileage" trust me.... you'll be tearing it up all over town, until it breaks. There's another site called competitiondiesel.com and the guys on there do alot of mods to these engines. If it's just the tuner you want then SCT with innovative custom tunes. You won't be disappointed.

I know the stereotypical 19 year old is known for nothing but burnouts and donuts, but you haven't seen my driving. Friends at school hound me for my "grandpa" driving. But I will admit, when I first get it I probably will dog it a little for the first week or two. Anyways, I do want it for mileage increase (yes I know very well how to keep off the gas) about 80 percent of the time, pulling about 15 percent of the time, and racing about 5 percent of the time. I looked at SCT, and I've hard from a friend of mine who is a diesel fanatic (dodge unfortunately) that SCT is the best for PowerStrokes, but my only issue is that they don't offer a shift-only-the-fly programmer. I can't have it in the economy setting and then a rice burner pull up beside me at a red light and want to race and I have to say "hold on about 5 minutes while I plug my programmer up and change to a higher hp setting please." I do realize that racing is pointless, but lets face it, you have to have fun every now and then. Anyways, thanks for the input so far.

I am sorry to say, but you guys disappointed me in this thread. I am 17, and I know that once in a while it is fun to whip around in my expy, but not all kids drive like losers with 87 octane rice.

First thing I would do is contact Jody over at DP. DP-Tuners are not the cheapest, but they certainly are the best. The guy custom makes tunes and you can tell him you added such and such modifications and he can make tunes specifically for your mods.

Before you start tearing it up against any ricers at all, get some ARP head studs and pu them in, the stock ones are known for cracking.

The reason for the lack of smoke will be because of certain things such as the EGR if I am correct. While it is not illegal, I have seen it done many time, an EGR Delete. It takes the EGR out of the system, but I am not sure what needs to be done for this. It is linked to the computer on board, so I am certain you dont just take it out and patch the hoses together.

When you get the tunes from Jody or SCT, JODY FTW, if you use the 120HP or 140HP Aggressive tune, it will do the most damage to your trucks components if they can't handle it, but it will produce the most black smoke. Since you have an 04, you will need to have your emissions regulated when you get inspected or yearly, I am not sure. So make sure you switch the tuner back to stock when you go in for testing. Another thing, if you have a warranty of some sort, a tuner will void it in most cases. Hope I was helpful

You don't want the shift on the fly cause after a while it won't be shifting nothing. Go with the SCT. You can get some good custom tunes that tune the engine and the tranny..... You can have one made that will blow all the black smoke you want, by the way that's fuel that your wasting so it doesn't really help the mpgs. That's all i'm gonna say so good luck with whatever you choose!

I am actually asking this, not being a troll stating your wrong or anything. What is wrong with Jody's F-6 Set up? Most people seem to love it and recommend it. I have been gone for a few months, but did the whole board switch from DP to SCT for some reason?

Nothing at all, but it's for a 7.3. The op has a 6.0.
